Biography

Born into a poor peasant family. He graduated from elementary school in his native village and two classes of a gymnasium in Beran. Due to lack of funds, he had to stop his studies and return to his native village, where he was engaged in agriculture before the outbreak of World War II.

When the party organization of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPYU) and the Union of Communist Youth of Yugoslavia (SKMJ) was formed in 1935 in the province of Berane, joined the SKJU. In the same year, he participated in demonstrations on Mount ишiška, and then in demonstrations supporting the strike of Berane high schools. In early 1936 he was admitted to the Communist Party, a few days later he was arrested for participating in the conflict between youth and the gendarmerie patrol and was sentenced to three years in prison.

After his release, he continued his revolutionary work among youth. In 1939 he was elected a member of the CPY committee in Beran, at the same time he headed the local organization of the SKMJ. In the same year, he participated as a delegate at the Seventh CPY Regional Conference in Montenegro, Bok, Sanjak, Kosovo and Metohija. By 1940, he was arrested several times.

People's Liberation Struggle

In 1940 he was mobilized for military service. In April 1941, while trying to form a military unit to resist the Nazi invaders, he was captured by the Germans in Klyuch. During the transportation of prisoners, he managed to escape and return to his homeland. Immediately after his return, he took up the work of the local Communist Party Committee on Berane and worked on preparations for an armed uprising. In early July 1941, he was elected secretary of the local CPY committee. He participated in the liberation of Berane and led the organization of socio-economic activities in the liberated territory. In the fall of 1941, after the defeat of the uprising, he managed to maintain unity and the fighting spirit of the rebel units.

In October 1941, at a party conference, he was re-elected secretary of the local committee and was elected a member of the CPY district committee for Kolasin , Berane and Andreevice . During the reorganization of partisan detachments in Montenegro, he became first the political commissioner of the Donjavasoevich brigade, and then the political commissar of the partisan detachment of Berane. In January 1942, he was wounded and was treated in partisan hospitals in Kolasin and Zabljak .

By the spring of 1943, his partisan group was the strongest fighting detachment behind enemy lines in the occupied territory of Montenegro. In October 1943, after the liberation of Upper Polymle, he became a member of the provincial committee of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia for Montenegro and the Gulf of Kotov , and in early 1944 he was elected the organizational secretary of the provincial committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine. He participated in the preparation and work of the National Anti-Fascist Council for the People's Liberation of Montenegro, and in early 1945 he was elected to the Anti-Fascist Council for the People's Liberation of Yugoslavia .

Post-war time

By the decision of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in March 1945, after the murder of Miladin Popovich, he was sent to Kosovo and Metohija, where he took up the post of secretary of the Communist Party in this region. In this capacity, he remained until February 1956, at the same time he was secretary of the regional committee of the Popular Front of Kosovo and Metohija, chairman of the executive council of the Socialist Union of the Working People of Kosovo and Metohija, member of the regional council of the Union of Veterans of War in Kosovo and Metohija.

In 1953-1956 at the same time served as chairman of the People’s Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Kosovo and Metohija.

In mid-1956 he moved from Pristina to Belgrade, where he served as a member of the Executive Council of the People’s Assembly of Serbia, secretary (minister) of agriculture of the People’s Republic of Serbia. In mid-1962, according to the decision of the Central Committee of the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia, he returned to Montenegro, where from December 1962 to June 1963 he served as chairman of the Executive Council of the People’s Republic of Montenegro, a member of the Union Executive Council of Yugoslavia. In 1963-1968 - Chairman of the Supreme Committee of the Central Committee of the Union of Communists of Montenegro.

From 1969, until his death, he was elected a member of the Council of the Federation of the SFRY .

He was elected a deputy of the Federal Assembly of the People’s Republic of Serbia, the People’s Republic of Montenegro, was a member of the leadership of the Socialist Union of the Working People of Yugoslavia and Serbia, and also the Union of Unions of the Fighters of the People's Liberation War of Yugoslavia and Serbia.

Member of the Central Committee of the UCC (1948-1974). Member of the Central Committee of the Union of Communists of Serbia since 1945, and since 1957 - member of its Executive Committee.

Awards and titles

People's Hero of Yugoslavia (1953).

Hero of Socialist Labor SFRY. He was awarded the Orders of National Liberation, the Golden Star of the Order of Merit for the People, the Golden Star of the Order of Brotherhood and Unity, and the Partisan Memory Medal (1941).
