Biography

Deser received his bachelor's degree in 1949 at Brooklyn College in New York and received his master's degree in 1950 at Harvard University, where he received his doctorate in 1953 in the article “Relativistic Interaction of Two Bodies”. From 1953 to 1955 he was at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton. He was at the Niels Bohr Institute from 1955 to 1957, and also a professor from Harvard University from 1957 to 1958. He was a visiting professor at the Sorbonne during 1966–67 and 1971–72, a visiting professor at All Souls College in Oxford in 1977.

In the context of the general theory of relativity, he developed, with Richard Arnovitt and Charles Mizner, in the ADM formalism, roughly speaking, a way of describing space - time in space develops over time, which allows theoretically processing Einstein from the point of view of a more general formalism. Used in physics to describe dynamical systems, namely, the Hamiltonian formalism. Within the framework of this formalism, there is also a direct way to determine on a global scale such quantities as energy or, equivalently, mass (the so-called mass / energy of ADM), which, according to the general theory of relativity, is not trivial at all. With L. Abbott, Deser expanded the concept of energy for gravity with a cosmological constant. And with Claudio Teitelboim, he showed that supergravity has positive energy.

Another of Deser's research interests is covariant quantum gravity. Deser applied the new formalism of covariant quantum field theory, developed by Gerard Hooft and Martinus Weltmann in the early 1970s. With Peter van Nyuvenheyzenom he demonstrated the nonrenormalizability of one loop of the general theory of relativity plus electromagnetism, plus Young Mills, plus Dirac fermion and plus cosmological constant. The obvious impasse discovered by these efforts was partially overcome in 1976, after a brightly independent approach from the modern work of Daniel Friedman, Sergio Ferrara and Peter van Nieuvenhaisen, when Deser and Bruno Zumino demonstrated that a 3/2 rotation field can be added to the general theory of relativity for creating a consistent locally supersymmetric theory called supergravity.

In 1994, Deser along with Arnovitt and Mizner received the Danny Heinemann Prize in Mathematical Physics. He and Mizner won the Einstein Medal in 2015. He was a Guggenheim and an employee of Fulbright, received honorary doctoral studios from Stockholm University (1978), the Chalmers Institute of Technology (2001), and is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. In 2004, a conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan was honored in his honor.

A conference honoring Stanley Deser and ADM staff was held in November 2009 at Texas A&M University for the 50th anniversary of their research.
