Biography
Born in the village of Zhabier, Tarnava County, Cracow Voivodeship . He graduated from the University of Krakow , and having defended a dissertation on yellow rhododendron under the guidance of the famous Polish environmental activist V. Schafer, he became a Ph.D.
From 1931 to 1940 he taught at the gymnasium and lyceum of Lutsk . During these years, S. Matsko showed himself as an active figure in nature conservation; without exaggeration, he can be called the pioneer of the conservation work of Volyn and Volyn Polissya (present-day Rovgen , Volyn and parts of Ternopol regions ). With his participation, the first reserve for yellow rhododendron is created in Volyn, he is the author of the first project of a network of protected botanical objects in Volyn, some of which - Cherry Mountain, God's Mountain - are reserved now. The scientist creates the Volyn Society of Natural Sciences, the Volyn Museum of Local Lore , becomes a member of the Polish State Council for Nature Protection from Volyn, publishes environmental articles in the press.
From 1940 to 1941 The scientist works in the Lviv branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR .
During the Second World War he moved to Poland, since 1945 he taught as a professor at the University of Wroclaw. Actively involved in environmental activities, one of the organizers of the Karkonoski National Park in Poland.
He died in Wroclaw on April 17, 1967.
