Biography

He began his career in the amateur football club "Electron" from Zhdenievo. After serving in the Soviet army, he was sent to Goverla from Uzhgorod, from where he transferred to the Carpathians in Lviv in 1978. A participant in the championship of the First League of the USSR in 1979, together with his teammates - Grigory Batich , Yuri Dubrovny , Igor Mosora and Viktor Kopyl - helped the club reach the USSR major league [1] .

In the 1982/1983 season, he played for Nistra, along with his many teammates from the Lviv Carpathians [1] . In 1984, he returned to SKA Karpaty, leaving the club at the end of the season. In 1985 he played for the Lutsk “Torpedo”. In total, he held 51 games in the championships of the USSR. He was a close friend of Igor Mosora [1] .

While serving in the army, he played for the USSR national team among the military at the tournament of the ATS countries.

Suddenly died on August 3, 1985 in his native Zhdenievo: he was expecting Igor Mosora to visit. The causes of death are not known for certain, although Shcherbey was not ill with anything [1] . He was buried at the Yanovsky cemetery in Lviv [2] .

Son - Miroslav Vasilievich Shcherbey (born 1968), head of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Emergencies in the Transcarpathian region, Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sports of Ukraine, head of the Volovets Regional Council [3] , deputy of the Transcarpathian Regional Council [4] . The name of Vasily Shcherbey is a football memorial tournament [5] .
