Nikolai Petrovich Kitsenko ( December 14, 1921 [1] , Nizhny Kurkulak - May 10, 1982 [2] , Zaporozhye ) - Soviet Ukrainian journalist , local historian , party and Soviet worker, one of the organizers of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve on the island of Khortitsa and the Museum of Zaporizhzhya History Cossacks .

Biography
Born December 4, 1921 in the village of Nizhny Kurkulak (now the village of Oktyabrskoe, Tokmak District, Zaporizhzhya Region ) in a peasant family. In 1939 he graduated from the Novomoskovsk Pedagogical College and began his career as a teacher at a rural school in the Zaporizhzhya Region [3] .
From 1939 to 1946 he served in the Red Army . He participated in the Great Patriotic War . After demobilization, he was at party work for five years. In 1954 he graduated from the Higher Party School under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine with a degree in Journalism.
In 1954 - 1957 he was the editor-in-chief of the Zaporizhzhya regional committee for broadcasting and television, in 1957 - 1959 he was the head of the regional department of culture, in 1959 - 1962 he was the head of the propaganda and agitation department of the Zaporizhzhya regional committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, in 1963 - 1964 - Secretary of the Zaporizhzhya Regional Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine, and since the end of 1964, 1973 - Deputy Chairman of the Zaporizhzhya Regional Executive Committee. His name is associated with the construction of new premises of the regional scientific library and the regional archive, the opening in Zaporozhye of a music school, regional art museum , and the Theater of Young Spectators [2] .
At the same time from 1966 to 1973 he was chairman of the regional organization of the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Monuments of History and Culture . Then they were registered for protection and approved by the regional executive committee of 1,182 historical and cultural monuments.
On March 21, 1973 , he was dismissed from the post of deputy chairman of the Zaporizhzhya regional executive committee in connection with “serious methodological miscalculations,” but in fact was accused of nationalism . In 1973 he was the head of the regional union press. In 1973 - 1982 - Head of the Labor Department of the Zaporizhzhya Regional Executive Committee.
He died in Zaporozhye on May 10, 1982 , where he was buried in the Southern cemetery [2] .

Social and creative activities
He studied the history of the city of Zaporozhye , took care of the revival and preservation of the national historical and cultural heritage and spirituality, historical monuments of Ukraine. In 1965 , while preparing for the 200th anniversary of Zaporozhye, together with the head of the regional department of culture S. Kirichenko, he initiated consideration by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine and the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR on the issue of declaring the island of Khortitsa a nature reserve and creating a Cossack historical and cultural memorial on it, after which the presidium of the Central Committee The KPU on August 31 and the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR on September 18, 1965 adopted a resolution “On the perpetuation of memorial sites related to the history of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks”. The island of Khortytsya was declared the State Historical and Cultural Reserve. Nikolai Petrovich plunged headlong into the creation of the named memorial. He constantly deepened his knowledge of the history of the Zaporizhzhya Cossacks, deeply studied the scientific intelligence of Academician Dmitry Yavornitsky , the works of other historians and Cossacks, and already in 1967 his book Khortitsa in Heroics and Legends was published on the place and role of the island in the history of Zaporizhzhya Cossacks. In addition, he wrote the books “Zaporozhye in the storms of the revolution” (1969) and “Khortytsa” (1970), was the author of poems , short stories , essays , and radio programs.
Rewards
He was awarded two orders of the Badge of Honor , orders of the Red Banner of Labor , Friendship of Peoples , and medals .
Laureate of the Dmitry Yavornitsky State Prize ( 1992 , posthumously; Laureate Badge No. 1) [3] .
Memory
In autumn 1995 , a memorial plaque with a portrait of Nikolai Kitsenko was installed in the premises of the Khortitsky Cossack Museum.
