History
Construction
The mansion was built on Mukhina Gora, a historic area on the banks of the Moskva River , which is currently occupied by Rostovskaya Embankment . The artist Vasily Baksheev bought a plot in the 2nd Blagoveshchensky Lane in 1901 [6] [7] . At the beginning of the 20th century "it was a quiet place with a beautiful view of the Moscow River, on Dorogomilovo , with gardens and ravines" [4] .
According to the memoirs of his daughter, Anna Vasilyevna Baksheeva, the house was built in 1903 according to a joint project of the artist and his friend, architect Vasily Borin. The two-story wooden building with a mezzanine was designed in the style of traditional Russian architecture. The windows are decorated with carved platbands in the form of fabulous birds, masters for work were invited from Vladimir Province [8] . A barn, lodge, cellar and laundry room were also located on the plot [6] .
Special attention was paid to interior decoration. The carving of wall panels was made by artist Sergey Malyutin according to old models [9] . He also helped in the decoration of interiors:
| Apartment enthusiastically decorated themselves. Furnaces, walls, and ceilings were painted by dad and S. V. Malyutin <...> Dad in the dining room painted silver stars on the ceiling, and the little eight-year-old Maruska stencils the squares on the panel in the dining room with colors on the panel in the dining room [8] . |
The workshop occupied the second floor — thanks to the large mezzanine window, there was always a lot of light in it [5] .
Culture trail
For more than half a century, Baksheyev’s house was a meeting place for Soviet artists [8] [6] . After the owner's death in 1962, a memorial plaque was installed on the house [10] .
The basement of Baksheev’s house served as an inspiration for the poet’s first literary experiences, Terentiya Travvika . In his memoirs, he recalls:
| During the years of my childhood, according to rumors, his sister lived alone in the house of Baksheev, and she was probably one of the rest of the house, and also a servant. The house was mysterious. There were rumors of underground passages under it, and even of hoards <...> and even what rumors! [ten] |
