Biography

The eldest son of Mirza Hussein-Ali, known by the name of Bahá'u'lláh (Arabic. “Bahá Allah” means the splendor, magnificence of God), the founder of this faith, Abdu'l-Bahá was born on May 23, 1844 in Iran and received the name Abbas at birth, took the name Abdu'l-Bahá (“Bach's servant”) and devoted his subsequent life to the spread of his father’s teachings.

According to the will of Bahá'u'lláh, who died in 1892, Abdu'l-Bahá became the leader of the Bahá'í community [1] . Abdu'l-Bahá was persecuted by the Sultan authorities. The Young Turk revolution of 1908 freed him from 40 years in prison. The visits of Abdu'l-Baha to Europe and America took place in 1911-1912. Soon, he sharply broke up with the Young Turks.

Numerous works of Abdu'l-Baha are written, as a rule, in the form of messages to believers and answers to questions. Many of his conversations and appeals are also recorded. In them he gives a detailed interpretation and explains the specific application of the general principles established by Bahá'u'lláh.

The years of the First World War, Abdu'l-Baha spent in Haifa (now Israel ). He did not leave Haifa, not looking at the shelling of the city by the British fleet (Royal Navy), nor the threats of the Turkish command. He personally organized large-scale agricultural work, thanks to which he managed to avoid starvation in Haifa and Acre .

In 1920, for humanitarian merit (helping the starving in Palestine during the war), he was granted the title of knight of the British Empire . Abdu'l-Bahá died in Haifa on November 28, 1921.

Notes

  1. ↑ Despite the opposition of many members of his own family, the main group of Baha'i believers recognized Abdu'l-Baha as their head. The younger brother Mirza Muhammad Ali, who rivaled with him and was declared Abdu'l-Baha "violator of the Covenant, " founded the unitary Baha'ism movement.
