Event
In the spring of 1996, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus carried out the operation "Landslide", aimed at curbing the flow of weapons and ammunition from the regions of military operations in the Caucasus during the First Chechen War . The station in Orsha, as a major transport hub in the communication between Russia and Belarus, was declared a zone of increased vigilance.
On March 14, 1996, at about 8 p.m. in the building of the station, the alarm of the left-luggage office department went off. Petty Officer Gennady Karamzinov and Sergeant Sergei Pashkevich went to check the signal, detaining two men when trying to open one of the cells. The detainees were taken for inspection to the police duty station, where police officers were at that time: forensic expert captain Alexander Kislyakov, sergeant Andrei Malanukhin, senior lieutenant Andrei Perehodchenko, police driver sergeant Sergey Ladysev and senior inspector of the duty station captain Mikhail Demyanov. In addition to police officers and detainees, there were also a medical assistant at the station’s first-aid post and a security officer in the room. During the search, one of the detainees fired a pistol shot through his pocket, wounding Karamzinov in the stomach, the second detainee pulled an F-1 grenade from under his clothes and, under threat of explosion, forced the police to let them out of the inspection room. Fearing persecution, the criminals threw a grenade at the police room. To minimize the spread of fragments, Captain Demyanov picked up a grenade from the floor and rushed into the corner of the room. Several policemen managed to grab a weapon and wounded one of the criminals with targeted shots. From the thundering explosion Demyanov died on the spot, Perehodchenko and Malanukhin were seriously wounded, the rest were less affected.
The bandits were repeatedly convicted a native of Kabardino-Balkaria Takhar Goroev and Belarusian Sergei Malinov, who at that time were wanted in Russia for double murder and robbery. Goroev was seriously wounded by police and fell bleeding near the railroad tracks; found him already dead. Malinov, having been slightly injured by fragments of a grenade, reached the private sector home, where he took the owners hostage. An hour later, Malinov released the hostages, but refused to give up and was neutralized only after being mortally wounded in a shootout with operatives.
