History
Built in 1946. The cemetery was created to perpetuate the memory of the soldiers and officers of the garrison of Hong Kong who died during the First and Second World Wars. According to the Commonwealth Military Grave Commission (CWGC), the remains of 914 British Indian soldiers are buried in 3 places here, of which 104 are Indian soldiers on the slopes of the Saiwan cemetery, another 287 are Indian warriors buried in the memorial of the Saiwan cemetery, as well as 118 a soldier whose remains were cremated in accordance with their religious customs, and their names are inscribed on plaques in the Saiwan memorial [3] . At the Saiwan military cemetery, there are also the graves of 228 Canadians [4] .
In total, the cemetery has 2,072 burials, of which 444 are unknown. Basically, British, Canadian, Dutch and Indian soldiers who died during the Hong Kong defense from Japanese troops in December 1941 are buried here.
At the entrance to the cemetery’s Memorial Hall there are tables with the names of more than 2,000 Commonwealth servicemen who died in the Battle of Hong Kong or subsequently captured and those whose burial place is unknown. Additional tables form a memorial for the cremated 144 British soldiers of the Indian Army, whose remains were cremated in accordance with their faith. In addition, the Saiwan Memorial commemorates 72 victims of both world wars whose graves in mainland China have not survived. 20 Hong Kong soldiers and 8 civilians are also buried here. A memorial plaque showing fragments of the battle gives visitors an idea of the scale of the military campaign.
