Biography

Anne grew up in a place now known as Kensington Palace , which her family then owned. She was the youngest child in the family [5] . Her early education included the study of Latin, to which Greek and Hebrew were later added. Her stepbrother, who tried to encourage her passion for philosophy and theology, introduced Ann to one of his Cambridge teachers, Henry More . This acquaintance led to a close friendship between More and Conway and their correspondence (which they had spent their whole lives) on the theme of Rene Descartes' philosophy, during which, from an informal student of More, Anne grew up into an equal friend to him. Subsequently, Mor will say that “he hardly ever met a man, a man or a woman of a better nature than Lady Conway” [6] . In 1652, Moore dedicated her book, Antidote against Atheism.

In 1651, Anne married Edward Conway, an English lord and politician. They had a son who died of the disease just a few years later. Anne's husband was also interested in philosophy and was once a student of Mora.

Conway was interested in Lurian Kabbalah and Quakers . At that time, in England, the Quakers were persecuted and even imprisoned. In 1677, Anne transformed her home into a Quaker activity center, which was a particularly bold act. [7]

Conway's most famous work, The Principles of the Most Ancient and Most Modern Philosophy, was most likely written in 1677. The influence of Franciscus van Helmont is noticeable in it . The Principles were first published in 1690 in a Latin translation by Jean van Helmont with the Latin name Principia philosophiae antiquissimae et recentissimae. The book was published in English in 1692. In his philosophical work, Conway develops a monistic view of the world, according to which everything existing has one beginning. Anne also criticizes the Cartesian theory that the body is composed of dead matter, the concept of the soul put forward by Mohr in the Antidote Against Atheism, and the dualistic theories of the relationship of soul and body.

All her life, starting at age 12, when she suffered a fever, Anne suffered from severe bouts of migraines. Because of this, she often became incapacitated for long periods and spent a lot of time under medical supervision and in search of medicines. Many famous doctors of that time tried to cure Conway, but not one of them achieved serious results. She died in 1679, at the age of 47.
