History

The street appeared almost immediately after the founding of the city in the 1730 - 1740s . It housed houses, estates and shops of merchants, first wooden, and later made of brick. At the end of the 18th century, at the intersection with Bogoroditsky Lane (now Lenin Avenue ), the Virgin Mary-Odigitrievskaya Church was built.

By the middle of the 19th century, a shopping center of Barnaul was formed in the area of Bolshaya Tobolskaya Street, in addition to merchant shops, a market square appeared nearby, which has been preserved to this day. At the beginning of the 20th century, at the intersection with modern Lenin Avenue, there was a building where the City Duma was located, and a district court was located higher up the street. The fire of 1917 destroyed most of the buildings, but later some of the buildings were restored.

Today, on Leo Tolstoy Street, there is the State Museum of the History of Literature, Art and Culture of Altai , the Municipal Museum of the History of Barnaul “City”, as well as the committees of the Barnaul City Hall on culture, transport, roads and landscaping, the Altai Regional Narcological Dispensary, shopping centers - “1000 little things” , " Old Bazaar " and others.
