Richard W. Gates III ( born Richard W. Gates III Richard W. Gates III, born 1971 or 1972 ) is an American political consultant and lobbyist. [1] Paul Manafort's longtime business partner. He served as Deputy Manafort when he worked as the manager of the campaign headquarters during the 2016 presidential campaign of Donald Trump . Early Years and Education

Year Gates is the son of Richard W. Gates Jr., a retired US Army lieutenant colonel who is the founder and CEO of Gates Group International, a management and information technology company based in Prince George , Virginia . As a child, Gates lived at many bases in the US Army, both domestically and abroad. [2] In 1994, he graduated from the College of William and Mary with a degree in management. He later earned a master's degree in public policy from George Washington University . [3]

Career

At the beginning of his career, Gates completed an internship in Washington at the consulting firm Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly (BMSK). There he worked with Republican lobbyist Rick Davis, and in 2006, he began working for him and Manafort at the new consulting firm Davis Manafort, with an office in Kiev ( Ukraine ). Gates’s clients included people like Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska , taking over this job when Davis left the company in 2008 to work for John McCain’s presidential campaign. Together, they played an important role in organizing the meeting between McCain and Deripaska in 2006. [4] [5]

In June 2016, Donald Trump hired Manafort to run his presidential campaign , and Gates followed his business partner. Gates did daily campaign activities. He claimed responsibility for the apparent plagiarism in a speech by Melania Trump at the 2016 National Congress of Republicans . Gates stayed on to continue the campaign after Manafort was removed, and then went on to work as a fundraiser for the National Republican Committee and Donald Trump Inaugural Committee. He then helped create a non-profit group called America First Policies in support of Trump, but he was expelled from the organization due to involvement in Manafort’s overseas firms. [6]

On October 27, 2017, the Grand Federal Jury indicted Gates and Manafort in the framework of the Special Prosecutorial Investigation led by Robert Muller regarding Russian interference in the US elections in 2016 and related issues. [7] [8] The two men were charged with twelve counts of conspiracy against the United States, perjury, money laundering in the amount of tens of millions of dollars, and the lack of registration as foreign agents in Ukraine , as required by the Law on Registration of Foreign Agents. [9] The allegations relate only to their work as consultants for the benefit of the pro-Russian government in Ukraine and have nothing to do with Trump's election campaign. [10]

Manafort and Gates surrendered to the FBI on October 30, 2017, and filed a plea of ​​guilty at the hearing. [11] Pending trial, Manafort and Gates were issued on bail of 10 and 5 million US dollars, respectively.
