Biography
She graduated from the dental school of the medical faculty of the University of Helsinki (1972). She received her doctorate in odontology at the same university in 1975. In 1978-80, a postdoc at the US National Institutes of Health at the Institute of Dental Research.
Since 1976 he has been teaching at the alma mater, since 1980 an associate professor, since 1990 a professor, in 1990-2004 she headed the department of pedodontics and orthodontics, since 1996 a professor at the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki. In 1983-1990 scientist of the Academy of Finland , and in 1998-2003 its academic professor. In 2005-2010, an honorary professor at the University of Copenhagen. In 2007-2009, the chairman of Biocentrum Helsinki. In 2009, a visiting professor at the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands.
Member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Literature (1994), the Finnish Society of Sciences and Literature (2005), the European Academy (2000), EMBO (2000) and (2015, was nominated EMBO), fello AAAS (2009). In 2008-2009 Chairman of the European Society of Orthodontics. Honorary member of the Finnish Society of Orthodontics (2010) and the Finnish Dental Society Apollonia (2015).
She was awarded honorary doctorates from the Canadian University of McGill (2004), the Belgian Catholic University of Leuven (2005), the Hungarian University of Debrecen (2008), the Swedish University of Gothenburg (1997) and the Carolina Institute (2010), the Norwegian University of Oslo (2008), the Danish University of Copenhagen (2002).
Author of over 250 peer-reviewed publications.
