Red Pill Blues [6] is the sixth studio album of the American pop rock band Maroon 5 . It was released on November 3, 2017 via 222 and Interscope Records . This is the first album of the group, released together with multi-instrumentalist Sam Farrar as an official member of the group, before that since 2012 he was only a participant in concert tours. The title of the album refers to the expression “take the red or blue pill”, which was heard in 1999 in the sci-fi film “ The Matrix ”. [6]

In support of the album, three singles were released: “ What Lovers Do ” with the participation of the American singer SZA , “Wait” and the new version of “Girls Like You” with the participation of Cardi B. Also in support of the album, the group went on the Red Pill Blues Tour, which began March 1, 2018 in Quito , Ecuador . [7]
History
After a tour in support of the fifth album V (2014), which lasts more than three years, Maroon 5 began planning the next album. The band first released two commercial singles. On October 11, 2016, the group released a single in the tropical house genre called “Don't Wanna Know,” featuring American rapper Kendrick Lamar . Another single, “ Cold, ” featuring American rapper Futures , appeared in digital stores on February 14, 2017, and on February 21 on CHR . After a short rescheduled North American tour in March 2017, the band began recording material for their sixth album at Conway Recording Studios in Los Angeles , California . At the end of March, the group began to publish a teaser of videos and GIFs in the accounts of group members on social networks. [eight]
On August 13, 2017, at the Teen Choice Awards 2017, Maroon 5 was awarded the Decade Prize. In his speech, frontman Adam Levin confirmed that the sixth album would be released in November. [9] Later, Levin confirmed this in an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music Beats 1 radio station. [10] On October 4, 2017, the group announced that the album would be called Red Pill Blues and will be available for pre-order on October 6. [eleven]
Cover
Snapchat filters were used to create the album cover. [12] On the cover are all seven Maroon 5 members depicted in a polaroid photo with filters on their faces. “We all use Snapchat, and filters have become a huge part of our lives,” frontman Adam Levine said in an interview with Billboard in October 2017. [13] We thought it would be fun to take more ordinary group photos and add some fun. ” Guitarist James Valentine added: “It's like part of the spirit of the times . Adam [Levin] and his wife , they just love to exchange photos during the tours. They always impose filters with faces on each other, I think it originates from there. Adam is always so entertained. ”
Singles
The album was preceded by the release of two independent singles. The first single, “Don't Wanna Know,” featuring American rapper Kendrick Lamar , was released on October 11, 2016, reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts like Adult Top 40 , Adult Contemporary and Hot 100 Airplay . [14] The music video premiered on October 14 at Today . [15]
The second independent single “ Cold” , with the participation of the American rapper Future , was released on February 14, 2017, reached the sixth line on the Billboard Hot 100 and the fifth line on the Adult Top 40 chart. [14] The clip premiered on February 15th. [sixteen]
On August 30, 2017, the band released the main single, “ What Lovers Do, ” featuring American R&B singer SZA . [17] The song contains elements of " Sexual ", authored by Dayo Olatundji , Victor Radstrom and Elina Stridh. The lyric video was released on September 15, 2017, and the music video on September 28. James Valentine announced on his Twitter that Wait would be the second single from the album. [20] The song was officially released on January 16, 2018, playing on American radio . [five]
Promotional
The song "Help Me Out", with the participation of an American singer and songwriter Julia Michaels , was released on October 6, 2017, along with the pre-ordered album. [11] Another song, “Whiskey,” featuring American rapper ASAP Rocky , became available for purchase at digital stores on October 19, 2017. As a promotion, the song “Wait” was released on October 31. On the Metacritic website , the album received 58 points based on six reviews, which means "mostly mixed or average reviews." [22]
Commercial Success
In the United States, Red Pill Blues debuted on the second line of the Billboard 200 chart with 122,000 album equivalents, of which 94,000 were net sales of the album, making Red Pill Blues the band’s sixth highest- ranking album in the country. [30] On November 14, 2017, Red Pill Blues became a gold album for selling over 500,000 units equivalent to an album in the United States. [31] By the end of the year, the number of units sold equivalent to the album totaled 596,000, of which 185,000 were net sales of the album. [32]
It is also the sixth Maroon 5 album to hit the top 10 in Australia , debuting at number seven on ARIA Charts . [33] The album was in second place on the Canadian Albums Chart , becoming the sixth album to hit Canada's top 5. [34] He also debuted at number six on the Official New Zealand Music Chart [35] and at number twelve on the UK Albums Chart . [36]
