Griffin, Cyrus

Griffin was born in Farnham, Virginia, in 1748, into the family of Leroy Griffin and his wife Mary Ann Bertrand. Educated in England and Scotland at the University of Edinburgh . While Griffin married Christina Stewart, the eldest daughter of John Stewart, sixth Earl (1699-1779). Griffin practiced private law practice in Lancaster, Virginia from 1774 to 1777. He was a member of the Virginia House of Representatives and a delegate to the Continental Congress from 1778 to 1781, and from 1787 to 1788, serving as a Federal Judge in the Interim Seizure Court of Appeal after being elected to the post in 1780. Griffin received a break assignment from President George Washington on November 28, 1789, to a new seat in the United States District Court for Virginia County created. Officially appointed February 8, 1790, Griffin was approved by the United States Senate on February 10, 1790 and received his commission on the same day. He served until his death (in Yorktown, Virginia) on December 14, 1810. He is buried next to his wife in a churchyard at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, Virginia.
