History
Savoia-Marchetti SM83 was developed by SIAI-Marchetti as a passenger aircraft. In fact, it was created on the basis of the SM79T bomber, in which the fuselage was enlarged and the comfortable passenger cabin was redesigned for 10 seats.
The first flight of the SM83 prototype took place on November 19, 1937 . From next year began its production. Available in two versions SM83A (for flights over short distances) and SM83T (for flights over long distances). The main Italian operator of the new aircraft was Linee Aeree Transcontinentali Italiane (LATI) , the aircraft of which made transatlantic flights to South America, Libya, and Africa.
Also, a small number of aircraft were sent for export to Belgium (airline SABENA 4 aircraft) and Romania (3 aircraft). In Belgium, the aircraft also carried out transcontinental passenger traffic in the Belgian colony in Africa Congo .
Since the beginning of World War II, the aircraft were transferred to the Royal Italian Air Force . They served to communicate with the colonies and Germany. Some more were sent to supply the Italian troops in the occupied territories.
