Title History
The original name of the Annunciation Square has been known since 1891, it is associated with the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary . In October 1918 it received the modern name Labor Square , according to the Palace of Labor located on the square [1] .
History
July 22 ( August 2 ), 1706 at this place was laid Katorzhny Dvor. It lasted until the 1740s. [2] In the 1740s, after backfilling part of the Kryukov Canal in the 18th century , the Katorzhny Dvor was located in the area of the square.
In the 1790s, the building of the Sea Barracks was built (architect F.I. Volkov , rebuilt by architect A.D. Zakharov ), in their place in 1853 - 1861 the Nikolaev Palace was built (d. 4, from 1917 - the Palace of Labor , from here modern name of the square).
In the 1840s, the territory was reconstructed in connection with the construction of the Annunciation Bridge , which connected the square with Vasilievsky Island .
On March 18, 1842, a decree was signed stating :
For the formation of the square at the exit from the bridge on the left bank of the Neva, to break the houses on the side of Promenade des Anglais with official Kholodovsky and from Galernaya street - Baron Shabo
By the autumn of 1844, this decree was fulfilled - the houses were partially broken (a small part of the house remained - Angliyskaya embankment , house No. 36). In the liberated place, without delay, according to the project of the famous architect K.A. Ton , the construction of the beautiful Annunciation Church of the Horse Guards Life Guards began (hence the previous name). The church was built in 1844 - 1849 , demolished in 1929 .
In 1845 - 1849, the apartment building of V. A. Vonlylyarsky was built on the square in the eclectic spirit (No. 2; the author of the project was architect M. D. Bykovsky ). In 1941 - 1944, during the blockade of Leningrad , an airborne defense unit operated on the square. Due to artillery shelling, many buildings of the square were damaged, they were restored in the late 1940s - early 1950s . In the 1970s , house number 3 was built on the square (the old house that stood on this site was decorated with majolica panels, which are now stored in the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg ). Composer B.V. Asafiev lived in house No. 6 in 1933-1943 .
From 1907 to 1997, tram routes passed through the area, replacing the show jumping from Konnogvardeisky Boulevard to Vasilievsky Island and to Theater Square. There was also a tram ring. Since 1936, the movement of the trolleybus appeared on the square.
In the late 1980s. road pavement was replaced. Stone paving was not disposed of, but was used in paving the embankment of the Winter Canal .
In 1998, an underground pedestrian crossing was built on the square.
Underpass Crossing
An underpass under Labor Square was opened in 1999 . During the construction process, a section of the filled Admiralty Canal was uncovered. It was originally planned as a normal passage under a busy square, but the project was redone by the State Unitary Enterprise Lengiproinzhproekt [4] in order to create an analogue to the Moscow Okhotny Ryad . It was decided to create an underground shopping complex with shops, flower trade pavilions, as well as cafes and restaurants. The first glass dome in the underpass for St. Petersburg was added to the project. After the construction of the trading pavilions, they were not in demand, most of the trading places were empty, and there was also a large flow of potential buyers promised by the authorities. As a result, the subway turned into an ordinary pedestrian crossing, not equipped for the movement of people with limited mobility.
