Anton (king of Saxony)

Anton ( German: Anton ), nicknamed Anton the Blissful or Anton Dobry ( German: Anton der Gütige ; December 27, 1755 , Dresden - June 6, 1836 , Pilnitz near Dresden ) - King of Saxony. The son of Friedrich Christian , Elector of Saxony and Maria Anthony of Bavaria .

Biography

He lived in complete solitude, doing genealogy and music, in which he declared himself as a composer. After the death of his brother Frederick Augustus I on May 5, 1827 ascended the throne.

Due to a tangible improvement in the lives of citizens during his reign, he received the nickname "supportive."

Saxony's entry into the German Customs Union on March 30, 1833 allowed trade, industry and transport to flourish further. Under the influence of the Paris July Revolution in Leipzig and Dresden came to unrest. Since 1830, his nephew Frederick Augustus became his co-ruler. Under pressure from the riots, the king agreed to adopt a new constitution , which was adopted on September 4, 1831 . Saxony became one of the constitutional states of Europe.

Anton was twice married: the first time was on the Sardinian princess Maria , who died of smallpox in 1782, the second on Maria Theresa , daughter of Emperor Leopold II , who died on November 7, 1827 in Leipzig, where the royal couple was on a detour after coronation (Huldigungsreise). He had no children from his first marriage, while children from his second marriage died at an early age.

After death, he was succeeded by his nephew Frederick Augustus II .
