The name of the manuscript comes from its place of storage in the Vatican library under the title Lat. 4803 . In the scientific literature, the Vatican Songbook and songs from it are denoted by the Latin letters V or CV .
History
The Vatican Songbook was commissioned by the Italian humanist, “a connoisseur and lover of Provençal poetry,” Angelo Colocci ( Angelo Colocci ) around the first quarter of the 16th century [1] . Researchers suggest that the manuscript was prepared simultaneously with the "Song of the National Library" or a little later and was intended as a gift. According to experts, the anthology is a copy of the 14th century’s earlier lost manuscript - the book “Cantigus” songwriter ( Livro das Cantigas ), mentioned in the testament to (c. 1285-1354) [2] .
Description
The songbook is made in the form of a parchment code without miniatures and ornamentation . The manuscript contains 200 folios with recorded texts of 1200 Kantig [2] without musical notation . In the first full edition of Monachy of 1875, the anthology included 1205 texts on 210 pages, 17 of which were partially or completely incomplete on both pages [3] . Most likely, one copyist worked on the copy, as indicated by the uniformity of the handwriting. In any case, the manuscript looks much cleaner and tidier than its “elder brother” “Songbook of the National Library”.
The songs are arranged under the headings of the three main genres of poetry in Galician-Portuguese, but they also contain preserved works of other less common genres. At the beginning are songs about love ( port. Cantigas de amor ), then kantigi about a friend ( port. Cantigas de amigo ), followed by a heading for cantigig ridicule and slander ( port. Cantigas de escárnio e maldizer ). The compiler made important exceptions to the rule of construction according to genres, since the first section recorded part of the cantigues of mockery and slander by the Castilian king Alfonso X the Wise (B 64 - B 79), followed by the author’s rubric of Portuguese King Dinis I with his songs about love and friend. The volume of the collection is smaller than the Song of the National Library, but some cantigi are represented only in it, and they are absent in two Lisbon collections.
Bancroft Library Songbook
In 1857 in Madrid, the Brazilian diplomat Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen ( Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen ) discovered a medieval manuscript in his friend’s library and removed a copy from it. As suggested by Varnhagen, he called the “Song of the Spanish Grande ” ( Cancioneiro de um Grande d'Hespanha ) turned out to be a partial and mirror copy of the “Vatican's Songbook” [4] . For a long time, the fate of the manuscript was unknown, until in 1983 the Bancroft Library of the University of California at Berkeley acquired at auction part of the archive of a Spanish noble family. Currently, the manuscript is in the Bancroft Library under number 2 MS DP3 F3, (MS UCB 143), Vol. 131 and therefore bears the name “Bancroft Library Songbook”, contains 273 leaves of 335 x 230 millimeters in size, without any doubt is the original from which Varnhagen made a copy in 1857, calling it the “Song of the Spanish Grande”. The creation of the manuscript dates back to the end of the XVI - the beginning of the XVII century [3] .
