Biography

He studied architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1864-1870). He received medals from the Academy of Arts: a small silver (1870) for the "project of a country club" and a large incentive medal for "calculating the sustainability of the stone church . " He graduated from the course of sciences in 1870. Big silver medal (1871) for the "project of the concert hall" . The title of class artist of the 3rd degree (1891). The title of academician (1892). Supervised the strengthening of the Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev; built in Kiev: monuments to Nicholas I and Bogdan Khmelnitsky, as well as St. Nicholas Cathedral in the fence of the Intercession Women's Communal Monastery. One of the founders of the Kiev Art College and its director (since 1901). [2]

In Kiev, he was a city ( 1873 - 1887 ) and diocesan architect ( 1875 - 1898 ), an architect of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra ( 1893 - 1899 ), a vowel of the city council and a member of the city council. He served as chairman of the board of the Kiev Literary and Artistic Society and chairman of the architectural department of the Kiev branch of the Imperial Russian Technical Society. One of the founders (in 1901 ) and the permanent director of the Kiev Art College .

For almost forty years of his activity in Kiev, the architect erected 18 churches, 3 monuments, 27 public buildings and hundreds of private houses.

Vladimir Nikolaev is the author of several publications on architecture, restoration, and architectural legislation. The son of Nikolaev Ippolit was a Kiev city architect in 1892 - 1917 , and his son Leonid became a pianist and teacher. He was buried at Askold's grave (the tombstone was not preserved).

Civil Engineering

Among the most interesting works of V. N. Nikolaev:

  • Merchant meeting with a beautiful concert hall ( 1882 ), which now houses the National Philharmonic of Ukraine ;
  • the building of the city Credit Society (1897, not preserved);
  • buildings of the Jewish Hospital ( 1884 - 1896 ), now part of the Kiev Regional Hospital;
  • a hospital for laborers (1892-1894), now the Institute for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood (Okhmadet);
  • Degteryevskaya almshouse complex (shelter) (1900-1902);
  • National Hotel (1876, not preserved)

The mansions built by Nikolaev amaze with the decoration and splendor of the interior:

  • the mansion of Fyodor Tereshchenko (1877-1884, together with Andrei Gun; now - the Kiev Museum of Russian Art );
  • the mansion of Markus Zaitsev (1897);
  • Liberman Mansion (1898; now - the building of the Union of Writers of Ukraine);
  • Halperin's mansion (1899; now - the committee building of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine);
  • the mansion of Vasily Simirenko (1890s).

The most interesting works of Nikolaev in the genre of tenement houses include the National and Bel-vu hotels on Khreshchatyk (not preserved).

Religious buildings

The temples built by Nikolaev are considered the most valuable part of his heritage. In total, he built more than eighty of them in Kiev and the Kiev diocese.

Vladimir Nikolaev adhered to the "Byzantine" and "Russian" styles.

Examples of his works in the "Byzantine" style are the churches:

  • The refectory church of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra ( 1893 - 1895 ),
  • Ascension Church ( 1884 - 1888 ) at the Baykovsky cemetery,
  • Sretenskaya church (not preserved),
  • Vvedensky church ( 1880s , was destroyed, is now being recreated),
  • St. Michael's Church in the Alexander Hospital (1893-1901, was destroyed, is now recreated),
  • Annunciation Church ( 1885 - 1887 , not preserved),
  • Alexander Nevsky Church ( 1888 - 1889 , not preserved).

In the "Russian style" sustained:

  • complex of the Intercession Monastery ( 1896 - 1911 ),
  • the chapel on Lukyanovka ( 1891 , not preserved).
