Company

System development began in 2012 as part of the Pladform company. It was founded by Armen Gulinyan, a former co-founder of Pirogov Bureau and an employee of the media holding Yellow, Black and White , which became the first investor in the new company. In July-August 2013, the company established a partnership with a reseller of Gazprom-Media Digital and began a closed beta testing of the platform. An attempt to attract additional investment from advertising market companies was unsuccessful, so the company grew by income from core activities [1] [2] [3] .

At the end of 2013, the company was invested in the company by the Russian localizer and publisher of online games Innova , and its founder Georgy Chumbridze invited the next investor, Ivan Tavrin, to Pladform . According to Gulinyan, at the beginning of 2015, the total investment in the project amounted to about 20 million rubles, and none of the co-owners of the company had a controlling stake, so the management of the company remained in the hands of the CEO [1] [2] [3] [4] .

In 2015, Yellow, Black and White withdrew from the Plaidform capital. In 2016, it became known about the merger of Pladform and the management company of the Russian video hosting Rutube , owned by Gazprom-Media Holding . The holding company received 33.3% in the combined company “Ruform”, and the owners of “Pladform” shared 66.6%. Gulinyan was appointed General Director of the combined company. As a result of the merger, Gazprom-Media Holding gained access to the content distribution network, and Pladform gained access to licensed content of channels belonging to the Gazprom-Media structure, and B2B solutions for copyright holders and advertising tools continued to operate under the Pladform brand, and B2C platform retained the name Rutube. After the merger, Rutube increased the share of video views on Runet from 15% to 40% and climbed to the top of the app ratings in Google Play and AppStore stores [5] [4] [6] .

Work Model

The Pladform platform acts as an intermediary between copyright holders, advertisers and Internet sites, providing video storage on their own servers and broadcasting through their own media player with video advertising support. Through the system, copyright holders can post their own content on sites connected to Pladform and search for previously downloaded ones with copyright infringement - such videos are “cleaned” from a legal point of view. Pladform makes money by including advertising materials in videos: 75% of the revenue from the advertising display is received by the content owner, and 25% is shared with the site that hosted the media player [1] [7] [2] [8] .

In 2015, Pladform had 5.95 billion views [5] . At the beginning of 2016, Pladform worked with 130 Russian and foreign copyright holders, including Yellow, Black and White , Alexander Maslyakov and Company (AMiK), Red Media , Gazgolder , Red Square and STV . The company’s player was installed on almost 2.5 thousand sites, including video hosting sites, news and entertainment sites and social networks , including VKontakte , Odnoklassniki and My World (they provided the service with about 40% of views); It is also integrated into mobile applications and works in Smart TV systems [1] [7] [2] . The Pladform library has about 1 million pieces of licensed content. In the summer of 2017, VKontakte opened a content exchange focused on administrators of public pages of a social network and operating on the basis of the combined Pladform and Rutube catalog [9] .

As of September 2017, Pladform, according to Digital Video IAB Russia, was the second largest player in the Russian online video market, second only to Youtube (21.5 million and 26.8 million, respectively) [10] .
