He made three flights into space as a flight engineer.
The first one - October 9-11, 1977, together with the commander of the ship Vladimir Kovalenk on the Soyuz-25 ship, whose program included docking with the Salyut-6 OS and work on its board, but due to a malfunction of the space ship, the dock was canceled , the flight is stopped early.
February 25 - August 19, 1979 V.V. Ryumin together with the ship’s commander Vladimir Lyakhov made the second space flight on the Soyuz-32 spacecraft and the Salyut-6 orbital research complex Soyuz. At that time, it was the longest 175-day orbital flight, during which, on August 15, 1979, cosmonauts Ryumin and Lyakhov made an unplanned spacewalk , where they conducted a detachment of the satellite radio telescope KRT-10 that was hooked to the station structural elements. ship 1 hour 23 minutes. The return to Earth was carried out on board the Soyuz-34 spacecraft.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated August 19, 1979 for courage and heroism shown in flight, astronaut Ryumin Valery Viktorovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 11429).
April 9 - October 11, 1980, Valery Rumin made the third flight at the Soyuz-35 spacecraft (commander - Leonid Popov ) and the Salyut-6 orbital research complex - Soyuz. It was another record for the duration of the flight - 185 days, during which the main crew of the OS received four visiting expeditions, including three international ones ; conducted a large amount of various studies, experiments, and repair work. At the end of the flight program, astronauts Popov and Ryumin returned to Earth on the Soyuz-37 spacecraft.
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 11, 1980, Valery Ryumin was awarded the second Gold Star medal for the successful implementation of this flight.
From 1982 to 1989, V. V. Ryumin was the head of flights for products developed by the NPO Energia. These are the Salyut or Mir space stations, the Buran orbiter, the Soyuz manned spacecraft and the Progress cargo spacecraft. In 1986 he was appointed deputy general designer of NPO Energia and in the autumn of the same year he left the cosmonaut corps.
From 1994 to 1998, V. Ryumin was the program manager for the World-NASA and World-Shuttle programs on the part of Russia. In July 1997, by decision of the State Interdepartmental Commission (GMVK) in coordination with NASA, Soviet cosmonaut Valery Ryumin, who is on a well-deserved rest, was selected for flight on the shuttle under the STS-91 program. From September 5, 1997 to June 1998, he was trained at the Johnson Space Center in the United States on the crew of the space shuttle Discovery as a flight specialist.
The fourth flight into space, lasting 9 days 19 hours 55 minutes 1 second, V. V. Ryumin made from June 2 to June 12, 1998 as a mission specialist of the shuttle Discovery STS-91. The flight program included the 9th (and last) docking with the Mir orbital complex .
On the day of the completion of the fourth flight, reserve lieutenant colonel V. V. Ryumin is again a retired cosmonaut. Having accomplished this flight at the age of 58, he also became the oldest cosmonaut in Russia who went into orbit (before that, the national record for 13 years belonged to Georgy Grechko , and in 2013 this achievement was surpassed by Pavel Vinogradov ).
The wife of V. V. Ryumin is the pilot-cosmonaut of the Russian Federation, the Hero of the Russian Federation Elena Vladimirovna Kondakova .
