Rigsbanktagn

16 skill rigsbanktagn 1814

Rigsbanktegn ( Dat. Rigsbanktegn - “the sign of the Rigsbank”) is the name of Danish copper coins in denominations of 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 and 16 skills from 1813-1815 [1] [2] [3] . Their release was due to the bankruptcy of the state in 1813, when the authorities were forced to abandon the coinage of money, the value of the metal in which corresponded to the nominal. A new state bank was created, responsible for issuing money. The management of Rigsbank made a decision on the inexpediency of issuing banknotes in exchangeable monetary units of skilling. As a result, rigsbanktagnes appeared, which were fiduciary in essence, that is, unsecured money [4] .

On the obverse was the emblem of Denmark, on the reverse - an indication of the face value, the estimated year of issue and an indication of the nature of the RIGSBANKTEGN banknote. Initially, they were produced at the mints of Copenhagen , Altona and Kongsberg . In 1814, Norway went beyond the control of Danish kings. The Danish authorities suspected that the Norwegian Kongsberg mint continued to produce rigsbanktegns whose face value was significantly higher than the domestic one. In Kongsberg, only 2 denominations of rigsbanktagnes were minted - 6 and 12 skills. Draws of 6 skills were insignificant. 12 skills declared out of circulation before other rigsbanktegn in 1818 [4] .

These coins were minted until 1817. The releases of 1816-1817 are dated 1815 [4] .
