In 1985, under the guidance of Professor M.A. Vasilik at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute named after M. I. Kalinin ( St. Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great ), the Faculty of Social Sciences (FON) was created, which included the departments of the history of the CPSU, Marxist-Leninist philosophy, political economy, scientific communism, and in 1988 In this year, the department of domestic and foreign culture was established at this faculty. In 1989, in connection with the beginning of perestroika, the Department of the History of the CPSU was renamed the Department of History; Department of Marxist-Leninist Philosophy - into the Department of Philosophy, the Department of Scientific Communism became the Department of Political Science.

The first dean of the Faculty of Humanities (1990–2005) was Professor M.A. Basil.
