Career
He began skiing at the age of ten. In 1989, he made his World Cup debut as a national group jumper at the home stage in Harrachov , where he immediately scored the first points, showing the 15th result.
He began to play regularly in the World Cup since the 1991/92 season, when Sakala entered the top ten of the four ski jumps on the Tour . At the Olympic Games in Albertville, he joined the Czechoslovak team and was able to win a bronze medal in the team tournament . In personal championships did not break into the top ten.
The most successful in the Czech career was the 1992/93 season . Yaroslav won two victories in the season (both at the flight stage in Bad Mittendorf ) and became the second in the overall standings, losing 21 points to the Austrian Goldberger and won the small crystal globe in the standings for skiing. At the World Championships in Swedish Falun, Sakala won three of the three possible medals. On the normal springboard, he was third, on the big, he became second, losing to the Norwegian Espen Bredesen a little more than two points. In the team tournament, the combined team of the Czech Republic and Slovakia (qualification for the tournament took place before the division of Czechoslovakia into two states) became the second, losing only to the Norwegians.
In 1994, Sakala became the world champion in flight , winning the tournament in Slovenian Planica . At the Olympic Games in Lillehammer, he showed the best result in his career at the Games, becoming the seventh on the big springboard. The Czech team also took the same place in the team championship on the same springboard.
In the following years, due to a conflict with the Czech Federation, Sakala played irregularly in the World Cup, mainly appearing on the flight stages. Of the four victories in the career of the Czech jumper, three were won on giant jumps.
In 1998, at his third Olympics, the Czech jumper again became the seventh in the team, and in personal tournaments did not even get into the top twenty.
He completed his sports career in 2002. After that he owned a sports shop, a nightclub. He later took over as the head coach of the Czech women's ski jumping team.
