Biography

After graduating from high school, in 1854 he entered the Belgrade Lyceum . In 1855 he transferred to a technical institute in Vienna and studied there until 1858. From 1858 to 1862 he continued his studies at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic in Germany.

In November 1862, by decree of Prince Mikhail Obrenovich, he was appointed professor of mathematics at the artillery school.

In September 1863, when the Belgrade Lyceum was reorganized into the Higher School, D. Nesic was one of its first eight teachers. D. Nesic worked as a professor at the Belgrade Higher School from the day it was founded until his retirement in January 1894.

In 1882–1884 and 1893–1894. He was elected a permanent member of the Serbian Academic Society, participated in the work of the Society until its merger with the Serbian Royal Academy in 1892. When the Serbian Royal Academy was founded in November 1886, the first 16 academics were appointed by decree of King Milan Obrenovic without a selection procedure. Among them was Dimitrie Nesic.

Secretary of the Academy of Natural Sciences of the Serbian Royal Academy from 1887 to 1892 and 1900 to 1902.

D. Nesic was the third president of the Serbian Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts (from 1892 to 1895) a. In December 1890, he was elected a corresponding member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb .

In 1811-1918 - Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Serbia.

As president of the Academy and a mathematician, Nesich was for several years a member and vice president of the International Lobachevsky Prize Award Commission in St. Petersburg .

Scientific activity

From 1862 to 1887, Nesic lectured in all subjects of mathematics at the Belgrade Higher School. He taught Euclidean and analytic geometry , trigonometry , combinatorics , algebra , differential and integral calculus .

In 1872, D. Nesic visited Vienna, Würzburg, Cologne , Brussels in order to study the system of measures in order to use the experience gained in Serbia. The result of this trip and work was the adoption of the new Law on the Metric System of Measures adopted in Serbia in 1873. In addition to the draft Law on the Metric System of Measures , D. Nesic wrote the book “Metarske least”, which played a large role in the field of measurement and system of measures in Serbia at that time.

D. Nesic is the author of 13 scientific works published in Glasnik Srpskog učeničkog društva and Glas Srpske kraljevske akademije, as well as several textbooks, including: Trigonometry (Belgrade, 1875), The Science of Combinations (Belgrade , 1883), Algebraic analysis (in 2 parts, Belgrade, 1883).

The works of D. Nesic were of great importance for the training of a large number of Serbian mathematicians who later created the Belgrade School of Mathematics.
