Geography

The river flows from the canyon

One of the longest rivers in Hawaii .

The waters of the streams that feed Waimaea originate on a plateau in the center of the island in the Vayaleale mountain swamps, at an altitude of about 1200 m. This is one of the wettest places on Earth, where up to 16,916 mm of rain falls per year [2] .

The main channel begins at the confluence of the Po-Omau ( English Po'omau ) and Vaiaulu ( English Waiahulu ) streams at an altitude of 350 meters [3] . The river flows south passing through the Waimaa Canyon , known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific Ocean” - the largest in Oceania .

The Vaimaa River flows into the Pacific Ocean , where it forms a small bay of the same name (bay), sheltered from the winds for most of the year.

River runoff and sediments were first studied in 1990 [4] .

History

Vaimaa Estuary

The valley of the river and its tributaries were fertile and densely populated.

At the mouth of the river on January 20, 1778 made the first stop on the expedition of captain James Cook , which was just opened for the Europeans, Hawaiian Islands [5] .

In 1817, a stone protective wall was built on this place - the Russian fortress "Elizabeth" .

In July 2017, about 500 volunteers began cleaning the river mouth from accumulated sediments and silt [6] .
