History

In 1390, Brest received Magdeburg law , but it is not known exactly which coat of arms was used on city seals until the middle of the 16th century [1] . According to other sources, the seals of the XV — XVII centuries preserved the official heraldic symbol - the image of a quadrangular tower with a high roof, which is located between the rivers of the Bug and Mukhavets [2] .

According to A. Titov , the right to get the coat of arms to Brest was granted by the Grand Duke Alexander with a privilege of 1494 : “in a blue field there is a silver bow with an arrow pointing upwards” [3] .

According to the privilege of the Grand Duke Sigismund III of 1554 , Brest received the right to use the official seal with the image of a quadrangular tower on a red field at the confluence of two rivers (the Western Bug and the Mukhavets ). This coat of arms is printed by the Voitovo-Lavnitic collegium of the city magistrate.

In addition, Brest had another seal, which is mentioned in his collection of coats of arms of 1584 by Bartosz Poprocki :

The city of Brest applies a bow stretched with an arrow and with the text around: Sigillum civitat Brestensis Magni Duc Litvaniae

In 1742-1775 Brest's emblem was a figured cartouche on which a bow with a stretched bowstring with an upward arrow is reflected. Above the cartouche is the crown [3] [4] .

After the third partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795 , Brest became a county town of the Grodno province , and the old coat of arms was abolished. The new coat of arms of Brest was approved by the Russian emperor Nicholas I [2] on April 6, 1845, along with other cities of the Grodno province. This version of the coat of arms was formed on the basis of the coat of arms of 1554. The new emblem had the following description [3] :

In the upper part of the shield, the Grodno coat of arms, in the lower, in a blue field, the confluence of the Bug and Mukhovets rivers is represented; on the cape, formed by the connection of rivers, a circle of silver shields is placed, among which there stands a fortification standard with a double-headed eagle, as a sign that the city of Brest has been transformed into a fortress

At the end of the XIX century. a project of the new coat of arms of Brest was created: “An inverted fork-shaped silver cross is in the azure shield. In the free part, the coat of arms of the Grodno province ”, however, the project was not officially approved.

The modern coat of arms of the city was approved by the Decision of the Brest City Council of People’s Deputies on January 26, 1991 : “On the blue field of the Baroque shield there is a silver bow with a bowstring stretched and an arrow pointing up.” It is registered in the Stamp matrix of the Republic of Belarus on June 1, 1994 No. 1.
