Biography

Early years

Martin was born in Cuba, in the province of Villa Clara, one of five children in the family. He got his name in honor of Lionel Richie - his mother’s favorite musician. His father taught him to play baseball.

At the age of 17, Martin began to play for the Naranjas de Villa Clara team, playing in the Cuban national series . He also played for the national team of Cuba. In 2006, he played at the junior world championship. In 2009, he became a member of the Cuban national team for World Baseball Classics , being the youngest player in the team.

During the 2010 World Cup, held in Taiwan, he fled from the location of the national team, reaching Tokyo through Mexico City. He then petitioned Major League Baseball to grant him free agent status.

Major League Baseball

In May 2011, he signed a five-year contract with the Texas Rangers , the amount of the agreement amounted to $ 15.5 million. After spring training, Martin began playing for the Rangers Farm Club in AA League Frisco RafRiders. In July, he was transferred to the AAA League as part of the Round Rock Express.
