Biography
Early years
Martin was born in Cuba, in the province of Villa Clara, one of five children in the family. He got his name in honor of Lionel Richie - his mother’s favorite musician. His father taught him to play baseball.
At the age of 17, Martin began to play for the Naranjas de Villa Clara team, playing in the Cuban national series . He also played for the national team of Cuba. In 2006, he played at the junior world championship. In 2009, he became a member of the Cuban national team for World Baseball Classics , being the youngest player in the team.
During the 2010 World Cup, held in Taiwan, he fled from the location of the national team, reaching Tokyo through Mexico City. He then petitioned Major League Baseball to grant him free agent status.
Major League Baseball
In May 2011, he signed a five-year contract with the Texas Rangers , the amount of the agreement amounted to $ 15.5 million. After spring training, Martin began playing for the Rangers Farm Club in AA League Frisco RafRiders. In July, he was transferred to the AAA League as part of the Round Rock Express. On August 30, 2011, Martin was called up to the club's main squad instead of the injured Nelson Cruz . September 2 made his debut in Major League Baseball.
The 2012 season started again at Round Rock Express, but on June 15 he again got a chance at the base, replacing injured Koji Uehara [1] .
In 2013, he entered the starting lineup of the Rangers for the opening game of the season against the Houston Astros .
After the end of the 2015 season, Martin was traded to the Seattle Mariners . In 2016, he set a personal record for the number of home runs per season (15).
In August 2017, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs , where Martin was included in the playoff team [2] .
December 5, 2017 signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers [3] . In the regular season of 2018, Martin played for the Tigers in 78 games with a defensive rate of 99.2%. In July, he was exchanged at Cleveland Indian for promising shortstop Willie Castro [4] . In August, the Cleveland leadership announced that Martin was recovering from a dangerous disease of an infectious nature and the timing of his appearance on the field was unknown [5] . In October, Leonis signed a contract with the club for the 2019 season [6] .
In July 2019, Martin signed a one-year contract with the Japanese club Chiba Lotte Marins [7] .
