Biography
Fanny Brother was the daughter of John Frederic Oscar Gustaf Oscar Ekbom (Johan Fredric Gustaf Oscar Ekbom), the servant of Karl of Sweden, Duke of Westergötland . In 1880, at the age of eighteen, she was admitted to the Royal Academy of Liberal Arts . In 1887, made a study tour to Paris. In 1889 she traveled to Germany, Denmark, Norway, England, Austria and Italy.
In 1887, Fanny married Erica Brother (1857-1924). They had four daughters in their family: Astrid (1888-1929), Torun (1891-1993), Ragnhild (1892-1894), Ingerd (1899-1952). Having married, she was forced to leave painting, but continued her participation in the Swedish art world as a patron of other artists.
In 1891, Brother became a member of the Svenska Konstnärernas Förening Association of Artists.
Works
The artist worked in the genres of landscape, interior painting, still life, portrait.
The most famous work of the artist is the painting Namnsdag ("On the day of the holiday") , painted in 1902. It is currently kept at the Swedish National Museum of Fine Arts . Among her best works are Blind Old Woman (1903), Free Minute, etc.
Fanny Brother is a subtle child psychologist, in her paintings children play games, spy on other children, quarrel, draw with enthusiasm. In them you can find features resembling an intimate French portrait of the artist Eugene Carriere, stories from the family life of the Swedish artist Karl Larsson.
In 1943, the personal exhibition of the artist was opened at the National Museum of Sweden, at which 126 of her works were presented. Fanny Brother painted in oil and watercolor. Her works showing the life of people in Sweden in the 19th century are an important element of the country's cultural heritage [6] .
Currently, the artist’s paintings are in the National Museum of Sweden, the Gothenburg Art Museum, the Museum of the Nordic Countries , and in private collections.
