Biography

He lived in Sweden, Poland, Lithuania. He studied in Leipzig and Utrecht . He received a master's degree at the University of Wittenberg . For several years he worked as a teacher in Schlesen, and in 1672 he became pastor of the Lutheran church in Vilna (now Vilnius ).

In 1674, he visited Russia, in particular, Kiev , where he met the archimandrite of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Gizel . He highly appreciated the piety of the Russians, deep respect for the clergy and the church. With the assistance of Gizel acquired a lot of literature about the Russian church. In Kiev, he studied religious monuments, as well as the Pechersky Monastery .

In 1675, his book about the Kiev caves Religiosae Kijovienses cryptae, sive Kijovia subterranea ... was published in Jena . The description was made on the basis of his own observations, as well as two schematic plans and several engravings, which he received from Gizel. The book presents the names of 43 saints who were buried in caves. In 1678 in Amsterdam published a book about the Dnieper rapids - "De admirandis mundi cataractis".

He also worked a lot in Vienna, Stockholm, in the Commonwealth.
