In 95 BC e. Seleucus defeated his cousin Uncle Antiochus IX of Kiziki and proclaimed himself king. However, a few months later, his uncle's son Antioch X the Pious defeated Seleucus and forced him to flee from Syria to the city of Mopsuestia in the region of Cilicia .
In the province of Seleucus, he tried to recruit a new army to fight for the throne and demanded payment of money from the inhabitants, which provoked an uprising. A crowd of townspeople besieged and set fire to his palace, together with Seleucus who had taken refuge in him and his adherents, who had burned alive.
The four brothers of Seleucus: Antioch XI Philadelphus , Philip I of Philadelphus , Demetrius III Eucer and Antioch XII Dionysos continued the civil war against Antiochus X the Pious , which led to an even greater weakening of the state.
