Middelze divided the current province into two parts. Thus, the eastern part was Ostergo, the western part was Westergo , Zevenvauden was located in the south and east, on the border with the current provinces of Flevoland and Drenthe . The coastline of the eastern region at that time passed through the cities of , Leeuwarden and .
This territorial division into Gau dates back to the time of Charlemagne . The date Charles founded Gau Ostergo is still unknown. Undoubtedly, Ostergo existed as a county in the 11th century. Coins were found that were minted in Dokkyum at the time when Bruno II was Count of Ostergo. This also indicates that Dokkyum was originally the capital of Ostergo.
In 873, the inhabitants of Ostergo were able to kill the Viking Rudolf Haraldson and his people who attacked Ostergo [1] .
Around 1200 AD Middelze with the help of rich monasteries was fenced off by dams, and was drained for several hundred years.
