Biography

From the nobles. The son of a lieutenant colonel.

He graduated from the 1st Moscow Cadet Corps (1908) and the Nikolaev Cavalry School (1910), from where he was released as a cornet in His Majesty's Ulansky Life Guards Regiment , in whose ranks he entered the First World War . Granted by St. George's Arms

 For the fact that, being on the road with the 12th Lancers, October 14, 1914 in battles in the area of ​​cr. Ivangorod, was fired from a separately located enemy trench for 50 people. Lieutenant Kovalinsky attacked this trench in an equestrian system, cut down 8 Austrians, and captured the remaining 38 people, losing only 2 horses. With his attack, he rendered indispensable assistance to the squadron when the latter captured the Zvolen Posad. 

He was promoted to lieutenant on December 6, 1914 " for his long service ", to the staff captains on April 23, 1916.

With the outbreak of the Civil War, Captain Kovalinsky joined the Volunteer Army . Since October 1918 - in the Reserve Cavalry Regiment, promoted to colonel . In January 1919 - the head of self-defense of the German colonists of the Prishibsky district and the commander of the combined-guard division. Then he was the commander of the division of the Life Guards of His Majesty's Ulan Regiment in the Reserve Cavalry Regiment. In the spring of 1919 he was appointed commander of the Consolidated Guards Cavalry Division, and on December 14, 1919 - commander of the 2nd Consolidated Guards Cavalry Regiment. In the spring of 1920, he was appointed commander of the 7th cavalry regiment of the Russian army . October 10, 1920 he was appointed commander of the Guards Cavalry Regiment. On October 19, he was mortally wounded in the head during an equestrian attack near the village of Rozhdestvensky Melitopol district. Posthumously awarded the Order of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker

 For the fact that in the battle on October 19, 1920, having received orders to attack Budenny and thereby alleviate the difficult situation of our units, he harmoniously, in perfect order, walking himself in front of the regiment, led such an attack. The enemy, unable to withstand the onslaught of the regiment, first stopped, and then began to retreat. The task entrusted to Colonel Kovalensky was brilliantly accomplished and he committed the act to his death, serving all the time as an example of outstanding military valor, courage and selflessness. 

He was buried in the Crimea.
