Cataulacus pullus

Cataulacus pullus (lat.) Is a species of tree ants of the genus Cataulacus from the subfamily Myrmicinae ( Formicidae ). Afrotropics : Guinea, DRC , Cameroon , Kenya [1] .

Content

Description

Small ants of black color. The body length of the workers is 5.3-7.0 mm. The length of the head is 1.32-1.84 mm (the width of the head is 1.58-2.16 mm). Upper chest without hairs. Head with pointed back angles. The antennae of the workers consist of 11 segments and have a mace of three apical segments. Propodeum angular with long sharp spines. The mandibular and lower labial palps consist of 5 and 3 segments, respectively. The scape is short, the length of the workers is 0.80-1.02 mm. The eyes are large. First abdominal tergite greatly enlarged. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of two segments: petiolus and postpetiolus (the latter is clearly separated from the abdomen), the sting is developed, pupae are naked (without cocoon) [1] [2] .

Systematics

The species was first described in 1910 by the Italian worldmecologist F. Sanchi based on materials from Equatorial Africa. They belong to the huberi species group and the tribe Cataulacini (or Crematogastrini ). The taxon Cataulacus pullus is close to the species Cataulacus tardus and Cataulacus theobromicola [1] [2] [3] .
