Story

1793 Great French Revolution . The Breton Umber de Chantélen, loyal to the King, together with his servant Kernan, opposes the Jacobins during the Vandeyskie insurgency . Here de Chatelain learns that his former servant Carval has become an ardent supporter of the revolution. In the absence of the owner, he organized a massacre in his castle. Chevalier Henri de Tregolan does not have time to save his sister from death, but he can still help Marie, the daughter of the count.

Kernan and Henri de Tregolan hide Marie in a fisherman’s hut in the village of Duarniene . Carval intrudes into the settlement and can grab the count during the marriage of Mary and Chevalier. Faithful Kernan kidnaps Karval and kills him.

Count Shantelen managed to avoid the guillotine thanks to the coup of 9 Thermidor and move with loved ones to England, where the wedding of Henri de Tregolan and Marie took place. “As soon as all emigrants had the opportunity to return to their homeland, the count was one of the first to take advantage of this. He returned to the estate of Chatelain with his daughter, Henri and the brave Kernan. Here they have healed in happiness and tranquility. The count became a priest in a small parish, preferring this modest dignity to high titles that were offered to him ” [1] .

History of creation and publication

The story first appeared in the magazine “ Musée des familles ” entitled “The Comte de Chantelen. Episode of the Revolution ”( Fr. Le Comte de Chanteleine. Épisode de la révolution ) with 16 illustrations by Morin, A. de Bar and Jean-Valentin Fulke (Morin, A. de Bar, Jean-Valentin Foulquier). Vern planned to include the novel in the collection Memories of Childhood and Youth, but he did not go out of print, and the publisher Etzel no longer republished the story. After many years, in 1978, she appeared under the name “Comte de Chantelen. Episode of the Revolutionary Times ”in the 49th volume of the“ Complete Collection of Novels ”( fr. L'Étonnante aventure de la mission Barsac, Oeuvres Romancées complètes, vol. 49 ) [2] .

The prototype of the protagonist was Lieutenant Pierre-Susan Luc de La Shampyoner , participant in the events of the Vandey riot . Vern communicated with his children in Bren, near Nantes, and could become acquainted with his memoirs [3] before their official publication in 1904 [4] [5] .
