Story
Ray Nerely (born Wray Nerely ) is an actor who starred as a spaceship pilot in the Spectrum series, which was discontinued but became a cult classic in science fiction. Rey himself, however, did not become a Hollywood star, unlike his good friend Jack Moore, who played in the Spectrum captain of the ship. Frustrated by his failures and career take-off of Jack, Rei attends numerous meetings such as Comic-Con , science fiction festivals and comic book stores, gradually realizing that he has his fans and loves them [1] [2] .
Cast
Main characters
- Ray Nereli ( Alan Tudyk ) - an unsuccessful actor who played in the popular series "Spectrum" pilot of the ship Cash Wayne. After this role, the actor is offered roles only in science fiction projects. The name for the hero is taken from the series “ Justice ”, that’s the name of the character Alan Tuyudik in one of the episodes [3] . In many ways, the character is a reference to Alan himself, who played the pilot Wash in the cult series “ Firefly ”, closed after one season [1] [4] [5] .
- Jack Moore ( Nathan Fillion ) is also an actor, Ray's best friend. In the Spectrum, he played the main role, the captain of the ship James Raaker. After that, a breakthrough occurred in Moore's career, he became "an incredible movie star for action movies like Matt Damon ."
- Bobby ( Mindy Sterling ) - Ray's booking agent , transgender. In the past, she was an actress and had a wide range of movie roles, from category B science fiction films to snuff .
Minor Characters
- John Butell ( Casper Van Dean ) is a bartender who appears in all bars, regardless of location. At the same time, the bartender is uncomfortable when someone compares him to Casper Van Dean.
- Statten ( Henry Rollins ) is an actor who played in the Spectrum a crew member of the Hansheng spaceship.
- Dawn ( Amy Ecker ) - actress who played in the "Spectrum" crew member of the spaceship Bree.
- Jerry Lansing ( Nolan North ) is the best Motion Capture actor after Andy Serkis .
Production
According to Alan Tudic in March 2015, the project was under development for two years [4] . He conveyed the idea of the series to a manufacturing company that became interested in the project and began to draw up contracts. However, the sponsor left the company, filming never started [6] . Tudyk spent a whole year meeting with the producers, but was disappointed. When asked to find an audience for the series besides “Strange Nerds ”, he refused, believing that it undermines the concept of “Conman” and offends his fans. Thus, the format of the web series was chosen [7] .
Connection with the series “Firefly”
Spectrum is an explicit reference to the space opera Firefly by Jos Whedon . Alan Tudick and Nathan Fillion starred in Firefly starring as a pilot (Hoban Wash Washburn) and ship captain (Malcolm Mel Reynolds), respectively. Their colleagues also appear in Conman - Sean Maher (Dr. Simon Tam) and Gina Torres (Zoe Washburn).
Like the Whedon television series, Spectrum was popular with science fiction fans, but closed after one season.
Despite the similarity of Spectrum with Firefly and the presence of the same actors in the lead roles, Alan Tudyk stated that the series is not autobiographical. Nevertheless, “Conman” is largely based on the personal experience of the actor [5] [6] [8] .
