Reeves is the only child of photographer Arthur Raymond Reeves and Elizabeth Reeves.

In 1975, Reeves began studying the history of the ancient world at University College London , where he graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in 1978. In 1980, he became a graduate student at Durham University , and in 1984 received a doctorate in Egyptology. In 1978, Reeves traveled through the Douglas Murray Scholarship in Egyptian Archeology program to excavate the KV55 Egyptian tomb in the Valley of the Kings. In 1979-1980, under the Flinders Petrie Scholarship in Egyptian Archeology program, he conducted research in Amarna , and in 1983, thanks to an award from the University of Oxford , in the tomb of Tutankhamun .

In 1984-1991, he served as curator of the Egyptian department at the British Museum . Also in 1988-1998 he was the curator of the Egyptian collection at Highclair Castle , Hampshire , and also an adviser to the Egyptian department at the Freud Museum in London. In 2000-2010, he was in charge of the antique collection at Eton College . In 2010-2011, Reeves was a research fellow at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art , then until 2014 he held the post of curator (Lila Acheson Wallace Associate Curator of Egyptian Art) in the Egyptian department. Since the fall of 2014, he has been an honorary lecturer in anthropology and a senior expeditionary Egyptologist at the University of Arizona [1] [2] .

Associated Activities

Nicholas Reeves wrote in 1988 for the Daily Telegraph on archeology topics. Since 2000, he has been the editor of the Duckworth Egyptology Series , later renamed Bloomsbury Academic by Bloomsbury Publishing . As part of the series, among other reprints, Theodore M. Davis published The Tomb of Hatshopsîtû , The Tomb of Queen Tiyi or Tomb of The Harmhabi and Touatânkhamanou with a preface by Reeves [4] . In 2014, three volumes of Howard Carter 's The Tomb of Tutankhamun were reissued. [5]

Nicholas Reeves acts as a consultant and expert in documentary television films [6] .

Excavation Prohibition

Since 2002, Reeves has been banned from excavating in Egypt due to suspicions of involvement in the smuggling of artifacts. Three years later, after the accusations of the Supreme Council of Antiquities of Egypt and its leader Zaha Havassa on August 7, 2005, the reputation of an archaeologist was restored [3] .

In 2015, after georadar scanning of the tomb by Japanese experts, he stated that behind the northern wall of the burial chamber of the Tutankhamun’s tomb (KV62) there is a secret room with the remains of Queen Nefertiti [7] . However, subsequent studies by the National Geographic Society and a team of Italian scientists led by physicist Franco Porcelli of the Polytechnic University of Turin proved the absence of hidden rooms inside or adjacent to the Tutankhamun’s tomb, which was officially announced on May 6, 2018 by the Minister of Antiquities of Egypt Khaled al-Anani [8] [9] [10] [11] .
