Biography

Came from the Lermantov clan. His father, Nikolai Petrovich Lermantov [1] , after retiring from military service, lived in his provincial estate of the Chukhloma district of the Kostroma province . He was married twice, and Vladimir was his eldest son from his first marriage. According to the recollections of the granddaughter of Vladimir Nikolaevich Lermantov: “The family was big: there were about ten of all brothers and several sisters. Now I can recall the names of far from all, namely: except my grandfather, Nikolai, Vyacheslav, Ivan, Vasily, Vsevolod, Dmitry ... I simply don’t know the names of my daughters, only I know that one of them was married to Sumarokov, the other to Yakovlev ".

Vladimir Lermantov from infancy was enrolled in the regiment, according to the customs of that time. In the winter of 1812/1813, his father sent him to study at the Yaroslavl Lyceum , from where, despite his father's objections, he joined the army: By the highest order of May 17, 1813, he was enlisted as second lieutenant in the Tula Infantry Regiment . Later, in the newspaper Russian Invalid, he recalled his participation in the overseas campaign of the Russian army :

As a lieutenant in the army, I participated in the battle of Kulm , brilliant for the Russian troops, during the defeat of the strong French corps, consisting of selected troops, under the command of Marshal Vandam and his capture; while I was hit by a bullet in the shoulder. For the difference, I was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 4th (at that time he was St. Anne of the 3rd) degree, and in the Highest Certificate I was told about "that, being in the arrows, I approached the enemy with an approximate fearlessness, knocked over the enemy with bayonets and took an advantageous position. " In this battle, the youthful actions of my shooters contributed to the repulsion of the Prussian guns of the General Kleist corps captured by the enemy. The Prussian general Tsiten, witness of such courage of Russian brave men, introduced me personally, on the battlefield, to His Majesty the King of Prussia, who, after remarking about my youth (I was barely 17 years old), immediately awarded me the Order of Pour le merite , taking it from one of the officers of his retinue.

After recovering, he managed to take part in battles on the outskirts of Paris and, during the assault on the fortified heights, Bellevue was last wounded; was promoted to lieutenant . By the highest order of May 6, 1814, V.N. Lermantov was transferred to the Kremenchug Infantry Regiment , and a year later by order of May 19, 1815, he was transferred to the Life Guards Regiment in the Life Guards .

In 1816, he was an adjutant under Lieutenant General Pyshnitsky ; July 6, 1817 was promoted to headquarters captain; January 3, 1820 - as captains; February 23, 1823 - to the colonels with the transfer to the Life Guards Finnish Regiment , but the following year he was "dismissed from service for wounds with a uniform and full pension." In 1825, he again entered the service at the St. Petersburg Customs and in 1824 was appointed head of the Radziwill Customs.

In 1828, he again entered the military service as company commander at the Institute of the Corps of Railway Engineers , then became an assistant director of the Institute and in 1834 was promoted to major general . He supervised the construction of the Tsarskoye Selo railway .

In 1843, after a conflict with P. A. Kleinmichel , who ordered two students of the institute to be flogged, he resigned "with a uniform and full-time pension"; On December 4, 1843, he received the Order of St. George of the 4th degree (No. 6930) for his long service.

Acted as the head of the Military Engineering School and in 1848 he finally retired.

He was buried at the Volkov Cemetery in St. Petersburg (Bogadelinsky track). A monument was erected on the grave according to his own design, representing a massive marble pyramid, on the sides of which the places of battles in which he participated were written, and his military orders were depicted.

Family

His first wife, Paraskovya Gavrilovna, nee Vishnevskaya [2] , died in 1833 and was buried in the Volkov Cemetery.

Second wife (since 1835) - Elizaveta Nikolaevna, nee Dubenskaya, daughter of N.P. Dubensky . Their son is V.V. Lermantov .

Notes

  1. ↑ His brother, Yuri Petrovich, father of the poet Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov, was much younger than his brother Nikolai.
  2. ↑ According to family tradition, she was a close relative of either Pushkin himself or his wife ; it was believed that Pushkin was seated in an armchair belonging to Paraskovia Gavrilovna. There was also a letter from Olga 's sister Pushkin addressed to Paraskovya Gavrilovna, with whom they probably had not kinship, but friendships.
