Story

In 1969, Catholic priest Daniel Flynn ( Jeff Bridges ), singer Darlene Sweet ( Cynthia Erivo ), seller Laramie Seymour Sullivan ( John Hamm ) and hippies Emily Summerspring ( Dakota Johnson ) arrive at the El Royal Hotel on the California - Nevada border, where they get to know the only hotel employee, concierge Miles Miller (Lewis Pullman).

After checking into the honeymoon room, Sullivan, who actually turns out to be an FBI agent , Dwight Broadback, begins to remove FBI surveillance equipment from the room. It also detects other listening devices and microphones of unknown origin. Sullivan finds a secret corridor from which you can observe the guest rooms using double-sided mirrors and shoot them using a 16 mm movie camera . From the corridor, Broadback sees Emily drag the bound girl into the room and Broadback tells by telephone about a possible attempt to kidnap the FBI Director John Edgar Hoover , who instructs him to ignore the abduction and not allow guests to leave the hotel until all the tracking materials are found.

Meanwhile, Flynn invites Sweet to join him at dinner. She sees him pouring an unknown liquid into her glass of alcohol, and knocks him out with a blow to the head. Miles finds Flynn lying unconscious and wants to confess to the priest, claiming to be doing terrible things. He shows him a secret corridor, explains that the "bosses" regularly force him to make intimate meetings with hotel guests and send them the footage. Miles admits that he hid the film with the participation of one senior public figure who was kind to him.

Meanwhile, contrary to Hoover’s order, Agent Broadback is trying to save the hostage Emily, who, it turns out, is Emily’s younger sister named Rose. Emily shoots Broadback, killing him, and accidentally injures Miles, who was looking at what was happening on the other side of the mirror. The witness to the murder is Darlene Sweet.

Flynn appears and confesses Sweet to the fact that he is in fact a criminal named Donald O'Kelly, who ten years ago went to prison after an unsuccessful robbery of a collection vehicle. After receiving parole, O'Kelly returned to El Royal dressed as a priest to collect the money that his brother Felix had hidden under the floor of the room shortly before his accomplices killed him. However, due to memory problems, O'Kelly settled in the wrong room and found that there was no money. Assuming that the stash was in Sweet's room, he tried to give her drugs to gain access to her room. They agree to split the money in half.

In the lobby, Emily and Rose interrogate Miles about surveillance systems. It turns out that Emily took her sister from the sect of Billy Lee ( Chris Hemsworth ), the charismatic sadist in charge of a series of murders in Malibu. However, Rose says that she called Lee and told him her location. When O'Kelly and Sweet try to get away with the money, Lee and his sectarians arrive and take them hostage with Emily and Miles.

Intimidating the prisoners with a gun, Lee finds out about the money and the film, which, as he understands, is much more valuable than a bag of money. He starts roulette to choose between Emily and Miles, and as a result kills Emily. After Lee starts roulette again, O'Kelly attacks Lee and a fight begins. Sweet begs Miles to take the gun and help, but he says he can no longer kill people. It turns out that Miles served as a military sniper in Vietnam and killed 123 people. The suite tells him that everything is in order, and resigns himself to a quick death. However, when Lee is about to shoot O'Kelly, Miles picks up a gun and kills Lee and other sectarians with sniper accuracy. Rose mourns Lee, but when Miles comes up to her, thrusts a knife into his stomach. O'Kelly kills Rose. Before his death, Miles confesses to O'Kelly, confessing to the massacres committed in Vietnam, and he forgives him sins.

O'Kelly and Sweet collect money in a bag, Sweet throws a film of compromising material into the fire, and the couple leaves the hotel.

The next day, Sweet speaks to a small audience in the Reno games room. She smiles when she notices O'Kelly, who has come to see her performance.
