The finale of the 5th Lugano Cup - the World Race Walking Cup was held October 10-11, 1970 in Eschborn ( Germany ). Men's teams fought for the Lugano Cup, which was awarded to the best team based on the results of calls at 20 and 50 km.

The three strongest teams of the previous Cup draw, as well as representatives of non-European countries, received direct admission to the final. The remaining places were played in the preliminary round of competitions, which took place in various cities in August 1970.
60 walkers from 8 countries of the world took to the start.
Each team could put up to four athletes in each of the calls. In the offset of the Lugano Cup, each team had the best two results at distances of 20 and 50 km for men (points were awarded to athletes depending on the place taken).
Representatives of the GDR won both runs, which predetermined their third consecutive victory in the team event. One of the leaders of the East German national team, Christoph Hyun , also won a distance of 50 km for the third time.

Preliminary Round
The preliminary round competitions were held in August 1970 in two cities: Danish Odense and Hungarian Dunaujvaros . In the finals were two of the best teams from each tournament.
GDR, USSR, Great Britain, USA and India were exempted from participation in the preliminary round. All these countries received direct tickets to the finals.
