The museum-workshop of Sergei Konyonkov is located in the apartment of house No. 17 on Tverskaya Street , into which the sculptor entered in 1947. The building was designed by architect Arkady Mordvin in 1940 for the creative intelligentsia . The playwright Grigory Gorin , the pilot Alexander Gorgolyuk , and the musician Alexander Goldenweiser also lived in this house. In memory of Sergei Konyonkov, a memorial plaque was installed on the house [2] [3] [4] . The museum was opened in 1974, on the centenary of the sculptor [5] .

Museum Exposition

The museum premises are divided into two parts: the workshop in which Konenkov worked, and memorial rooms: a bedroom, an office, a hall and a living room. The apartment managed to preserve the lifetime interior designed by Konenkov. The museum collection contains more than five thousand exhibits. The exposition consists of sculptures, books, photographs [1] [2] [6] [7] .

The lobby on the second floor is painted blue. It has a plaster self-portrait created by Konenkov for his 80th birthday. Nearby is the bust of his wife Margarita Konenkova and the sculpture "Magnolia" - the figures of a naked woman. The room also exhibits furniture created by the master in the 1930s in the USA [8] .

In the hall where the Konenkovs received guests, the walls are decorated with drawings by the owner of the apartment “My Genealogy” depicting the sculptor’s family, and the picture “Paganini” is a full-length image of violinist Niccolo [9] . There is a library in the office: books by Alexander Pushkin , Nikolai Gogol , Leo Tolstoy , Fedor Dostoevsky , Honore de Balzac , Stendhal . It also presents books donated by Sergey Konenkov by writers Leonid Leonov , Sergey Mikhalkov , Peter Vershigora , and artist Evgeni Katsman . In the center of the room is a desk, and by the window lies the death mask of the sculptor, cast in bronze [10] [11] .

The Moscow workshop is a copy of his workshop in New York and is a bright room with five-meter windows. It contains the works of the author of different periods: "Reading Tatar", "Stoneborer", " Samson ", portraits of Johann Bach , Niccolo Paganini, Vladimir Lenin . In the center of the workshop there are sculptures of the Forest Series: Old Old Man (1909), Lesovik (1909), Bacchus with Malachite Eyes (1916), We Are Elninsky (1942), Relief Feast (1910) ) and others [6] [7] [12] .

The museum has a collection of portraits of the sculptor's contemporaries: Sergei Rachmaninov , Charles Hilder, Nadezhda Plevitskaya , Maxim Gorky , Fyodor Dostoevsky. Among them, the most famous portrait of Albert Einstein . The workshop presents his plaster cast, and the final portrait in marble is exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery . In the 1920s, Konenkov created sculptures of the Gospel cycle , of which the Prophet, John, James, and the image of Christ are stored in the workshop [6] . One of Konenkov’s latest works is the unfinished composition “Cosmos”: the central figure represents Cosmic space , and the symbols represent constellations [13] .

Events

The museum hosts exhibitions of works by young sculptors and artists, scientific conferences [2] . In 2009, the workshop hosted an exhibition of winners of the Yu. G. Orekhov Prize in the field of sculpture. In 2012, the exhibition of the photographer Elena Vazhenina “11 Monroe ” was held, and a year later, an exhibition of 40 Japanese photographers dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the Japan Institute of Photo Industry [14] [15] [16] .

In 2016, the exhibition project “Sergey Konenkov and Stepan Erzya : great associates, great rivals” was presented at the museum, introducing visitors to the work of the masters. At the exhibition, the model of a tombstone was first shown, made in 1961 by Konenkov in memory of Stepan Erzya [7] .
