Biography Facts
In the bodies of the KGB since 1962 .
In 1966 he graduated from the 1st faculty of the Higher School of the KGB named after F.E. Dzerzhinsky [1] .
He served as an investigator of a special department of the Turkestan military district, a senior investigator for particularly important cases in the Central Asian military district [1] .
Since 1971, in various positions in the management of the KGB in Moscow and the Moscow region [1] .
As the head of the investigation department of the Moscow Office of the KGB, he participated in the investigation of the criminal cases of many human rights defenders: Academician Andrei Sakharov , Sergey Kovalev , priest Gleb Yakunin , Natan Sharansky , Kronid Lubarsky , Alexander Podrabinek , Alexey Smirnov , Yuri Orlov , Viktor Orekhov (KGB captain who helped) and others [1] [2] .
Trofimov also investigated high-profile cases of corruption and the shadow business of the late USSR: “vegetable business”, “ cotton business ”, “ Eliseevsky store case”, “Ocean company case ”.
In January 1992, he was the head of the Anti-Smuggling and Corruption Department of the Russian Ministry of Security [1] .
In October 1993, he participated in the arrest of the leaders of the opposition Supreme Council: Alexander Rutsky and Ruslan Khasbulatov [1] .
In May 1994, he was appointed to the FSK Academy as the head of advanced training courses for senior staff [1] .
On January 19, 1995, by decree of the President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin was appointed deputy director of the Federal Grid Company and at the same time the head of the Federal Grid Administration for Moscow and the Moscow Region [1] .
He oversaw the investigation of the “Xerox Box” case [1] .
February 20, 1997 , according to some media reports, was dismissed as a result of a deputy’s request to Y. Shchekochikhin [3] . Dismissed with the wording “for gross violations revealed by the audit of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation and omissions in official activity” two days after two of his subordinates were detained for trafficking in heroin [1] .
At the time of his death, he worked as the head of the Finvest security service, and was listed in it as a deputy director [1] .
He was buried in Moscow at the Vagankovsky cemetery [4] .
Murder and its possible causes
An unknown person shot Trofimov on April 10, 2005 at 19:40 on Klyazminskaya Street in Moscow, near the number 11 house in his car, a jeep Grand Cherokee; his wife, who was sitting in a car, who later died [1] [2], was also injured.

In April 2006, a British member of the EU parliament , Gerard Batten, said in parliament that Trofimov had spoken to A. Litvinenko of the presence and activities of many former KGB agents among Italian politicians, one of which at that time was Romano Prodi [5] .
