History
The plot of the painting “At the Lithuanian Castle” (1881, has not been preserved) is associated with the assassination attempt of Vera Zasulich against the Petersburg mayor F.F. Trepov . This event was seen as a protest against the terrible conditions of detention of political prisoners in the Lithuanian castle. Police authorities prohibited the painting from being displayed at the Traveling Exhibition, which opened on the day of the murder of Alexander II on March 1, 1881. Yaroshenko was subjected to house arrest, and, moreover, the Minister of Internal Affairs Loris-Melikov granted him a “talk”. The painting was never returned to the artist. Based on the surviving sketches and preparatory materials, he again wrote The Terrorist. Now the picture is stored in the Kislovodsk Art Museum N. A. Yaroshenko [2] . (The artist acquired this house in Kislovodsk in 1885 [3] ).
The Assassination of Vera Zasulich
July 25 ( August 6 ), 1877 F.F. Trepov ordered the flogging of the political prisoner populist A.S. Bogolyubov because he did not take off his hat. The order of F.F. Trepov on cutting with rods was a violation of the law on the prohibition of corporal punishment of April 17 ( 29 ), 1863 .
The order resulted in an attempt on the murder of Trepov, committed by V.I. Zasulich on January 24 ( February 5 ), 1878 . Zasulich came to see Trepov and shot him twice in the stomach, seriously injuring him. Vera Zasulich was then acquitted by a jury on March 31 ( April 12 ), 1878 . Judicial acquittal of Zasulich provoked strong approval from the liberal [4] [5] and condemnation of the conservative circles of Russian society [6] .
