DescriptionThe body is tall, lyre-shaped, squeezed laterally, covered with cycloid scales . The scales are relatively small, in the lateral line 59–71 scales, between the lateral line and ventral fins 13.5-15.5 rows. Body height fits 1.6-1.9 times in standard body length. The maxillary bone is reduced, there are no teeth on it. There is a fat eyelid. The dorsal fin has 20–23 soft, branched rays. In the anal fin 23-26 soft rays. The pectoral fins are short; their length is half the length of the head. The ventral fins are equal in length to the pectoral ones. There is a fat fin . The base of the adipose fin is longer than the distance between the adipose and dorsal fins. The caudal fin is bifurcated [1] . The maximum standard body length is 84 cm and the mass is 2.5 kg [2] .
The body is silver. The fins are grayish, the lower lobe of the caudal fin, the anal and ventral fins are red [1] .
BiologyRangeDistributed in large rivers and lakes of tropical regions of Africa in the following countries: Senegal , Burkina Faso , Guinea-Bissau , Togo , Benin . Common in the Nile River and Lake Albert [2] .
