Christianity on the Islands of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha professes the majority of the population of these islands.
Description
Most residents of the islands of St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha are Protestants (75.9%). Of these, Anglicans account for 68.9, Baptists 2.1%, Seventh-day Adventist 1.8%, Salvation Army 1.7%, New Apostolic Church 1.4%, Jehovah's Witness 4.1%, Roman Catholics 1.2% from the total population of the islands [1] . Anglicanism was the only religion until 1845 , when a Baptist missionary, James Bertram, arrived on the island and founded the first official Baptist church . In 1899, the community became part of the Baptist Union of South Africa . Currently, 4 Baptist churches are open on the island, attended by 60–80 parishioners. The only Catholic church has been operating on St. Helena since 1852 . In 1884, preachers of the Salvation Army arrived on the island. Today, the headquarters of the Salvation Army are visited by 120 islanders. Seventh-day Adventists have been operating since 1949 (80 parishioners of one church [2] ). Pentecostals are represented by the International Way movement, operating since 1980 (100 parishioners). In addition to the above, in St. Helena there is one community of Presbyterians and the New Apostolic Church .
Jehovah's Witnesses on the island have been operating since 1933 . Now there are 2 congregations in which 125 publishers serve, four of them missionaries. It is noteworthy that the ratio of the number of Witnesses to the population in this country, according to the world report of Jehovah's Witnesses for the 2014 service year, is the largest in the world - 1/33, while the average ratio worldwide is approximately 1/900.
The main religion on Ascension Island is also Protestantism. In Georgetown is the Anglican Church of St. Mary, also on the island there is a small Roman Catholic church .
