Geography
Located at the north-eastern foot of the South Scottish Upland , on both banks of the Almond River. Located 23 km southwest of Edinburgh and 520 km north of London .
History
The area on which the city is now located was previously an important center for the production of shale oil . By 1870, more than 3 million tons of oil shale were mined here. At the beginning of the 20th century, oil shale production declined sharply due to the discovery of liquid oil reserves around the world. And by 1962, its production was finally suspended.
The modern city of Livingston was built in 1962, as part of the New Cities Act of 1946, designed to solve the problem of overpopulation in Glasgow.
