Biography

Vladimir Vasilievich Meshkov was born in 1903. Since 1920 he studied at the Institute of National Economy. G.V. Plekhanov (now the Russian Economic University named after G.V. Plekhanov), simultaneously with his studies, worked at the Moscow Institute of Labor Protection, organized a lighting laboratory there. In the laboratory of the Institute of Labor Protection V. Meshkov was engaged in physiological optics, studied the laws of perception of light through the eyes, questions of natural and artificial lighting of industrial buildings. Later he was the head of the industrial lighting department, deputy director of this institute.

Since 1934 V. Meshkov worked at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute at the Department of Lighting Engineering. In 1938, in the aggregate of his work, he was awarded the degree of candidate of technical sciences, in 1940 he defended his doctoral dissertation. At MPEI V.V. Meshkov taught the course “Lighting Installations”, from 1948 to 1976 he was head of the department of lighting engineering. On his initiative, a laboratory of ballasts for gas discharge lamps was created at MPEI, an electrophysical faculty was created, and later a faculty of electronic engineering. V.V. Meshkov was dean of the new faculty, vice-rector of the institute for scientific work.

Research interests: development of engineering calculation methods for the design of lighting installations, lighting quality assessment, study of light discomfort and glare.

Under the guidance of V.V. Meshkov, about 20 candidate and doctoral dissertations were prepared and defended, including doctoral dissertations by professors V.V. Trembach, G.N. Rokhlin, M.M. Gutorov.

With his participation, departments of lighting engineering were created at Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (now Kaunas Technological University ), Yerevan Polytechnic Institute, Saransk State University, and Tomsk Polytechnic Institute (now Tomsk Polytechnic University ). At different times, V.V. Meshkov was an expert in the Technical Committee of the Moscow Society for Lighting Engineering, worked at the International Lighting Commission.

At the initiative of the scientist in 1955, the journal "Lighting" began to be published again. The chief editor of the magazine from 1955 to 1968 was V.V. Meshkov.
