Childhood and Youth

Representative of the Legnica line of the Silesian Piasts . The only son of Prince Bzhegsky Henry VII with Scar (1343/1345 - 1399) from his first marriage with Elena (d. 1369), daughter of Count Otto VIII Orlamunde.

His mother died prematurely in 1369 , shortly after his birth, possibly during childbirth. The prince grew up in the center of intellectual and artistic life at the court of his grandfather, Ludwik I the Fair, Prince of Brzeg . Numerous scientific discussions, rich feasts and balls , theatrical performances, as well as knightly tournaments were held here . The collection of the princely library was one of the largest in Europe. Ludwik I of Brzegsky , being a patron of culture and art, took care of the proper education of his grandson and future heir.

In 1379, Henry VII of Brzeg , the father of Henry, married a second time. His wife was Margarita Mazowiecka , the widow of Prince Casimir IV Slupsky and the daughter of Prince Zemovit III of Mazovia . In the second marriage, two children were born: Ludwik and Maria, half-brother and sister of Henry. Despite the significant difference in age, relations between brothers for many years were warm and close until the internecine war at the beginning of the 15th century .

On July 5, 1396, Prince Ludwik I of Brzegsky transferred the cities of Klyuchbork , Bychin and Volchin to his eldest grandson, and on September 20 of that same year he was engaged to Anna Tseshinsky, daughter of Przemyslaw I Nosak, Prince Tseshin . But only on September 29, 1396 (nine days after the marriage), Henry IX, together with his grandfather and father, confirmed receiving Anna's dowry in the amount of 2,000 hryvnias. The prenuptial agreement also stipulated which cities would be included in the so-called widow's inheritance of the bride. A few months later, Ludwik I of Brzegsky gave his grandson half of the annuity from the cities of Brzeg , Vezbno and Olava .

Beginning of the board

In December 1398, Ludwik I of Brzeg died, and in July of the following 1399, Henry VII with Scar , Prince of Brzeg, his grandfather and father of Henry IX. The rulers of the Principality of Brzeg became the half brothers Henry IX and Ludwik II . In October 1400, they divided their fatherly possessions into two parts. The elder brother Henry IX took possession of Lubin , Chojnów and Olav , and Ludwik II - Brzeg .

On July 17, 1402, the half brothers Henry IX of Lubinsky and Ludwik II of Brzegsky participated in the congress of the princes in Wroclaw , at which they concluded a defensive alliance between themselves and other Silesian princes and assured the Czech king Wenceslas IV of Luxembourg of their loyalty.

The Captivity of the Brother by the Saracens

In 1404, Prince Ludwik II of Brzegsky went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land , during which he was captured by the Saracens . Only at the end of the year did the unfortunate news of the fate of the prince reach Brzeg. Prince Henry IX of Lubinsky, to redeem his brother from captivity, imposed an additional tax on residents of Brzeg , as well as on his own subjects in Hoynów and Olav . The necessary amount of 4,000 hryvnias was soon collected, but Ludwik II returned to Silesia only at the end of 1405 . During his captivity, Henry IX of Lubinsky exercised regency over the Principality of Brzeg .

The War on Ludwik II

In March 1409, Prince Wenceslas II of Legnitsky , Bishop of Wroclaw , bequeathed the Principality of Legnica and half of Zlotory to Prince Ludwik II of Brzeg . The rights to the second half of Zlotory and a rent of 6,000 hryvnias were bequeathed to Henry IX of Lubinsky. Wenceslas II Legnitsky also ruled that one of the two brothers could get Zlotoryya - the one who would buy the second part from the other. In the same year, Ludwik II turned to Henry IX with a proposal to buy back part of Zlotoryya from him. At this moment, Henry IX of Lubinsky, previously offended by the fact that Ludwik II of Brzeg was taken over by the Principality of Legnica , broke off his friendly relations with his half-brother. Soon, their argument grew into an open war, which lasted from 1411 to 1414 . The war continued, despite the mediation of Prince Bishop Wenceslas II of Legnitsky , who tried to convince Henry IX that he had the right to dispose of his possessions at his discretion. The dispute ended only thanks to the intervention of Czech king Wenceslas IV of Luxembourg , who forbade his vassals to fight. The brothers, with the assistance of Wenceslas II Legnitsky, reconciled and signed a document on mutual inheritance. The inhabitants of Legnica and Strzegom were obliged to obey both princes.

Prince Henry IX of Lubinsky passed away between 1419 and 1420 . The place of his burial is unknown.
