History

The island of St. Helena was discovered by the Portuguese sailor Juan da Nova while traveling home from India on May 21, 1502 . The Portuguese found the island uninhabited . The first known permanent resident of the island was the Portuguese Fernand Lopis , who lived on the island alone in 1515 - 1545 [2] . In the struggle for the right to own the islands, Great Britain defeated the Netherlands and in 1659 established a water supply and food supply point for ships and a military base on St. Helena. After that, the island began to be settled by immigrants from Europe, mainly from the UK [3] . From 1900 to 1901, the island was a place of exile for prisoners of war Boers [4] .
